Last stop for the Military Vehicle Preservation Society convoy ...

Fort St. John's Legion received a blast from the past this morning, as the Military Vehicle Preservation Society stopped by for breakfast before heading on the last leg of their over 4,000 mile journey. The parking lot and nearby streets were filled with over 85 historic military vehicles on their way back to Dawson Creek, after making the trek to Fairbanks, Alaska and back.

How To Get A Free Domain Name Registration With Website ...

Thursday, August 30th, 2012

How to register a good domain name for free with website hosting Register a domain name for your brilliant idea before someone else takes it.

How do domain names work? When you type a domain name, a request goes out to find out which server on the Internet has that site. The domain name is then changed into a set of numbers identifying that machine. The table that tells which domain name goes with what numbers is called a ?registry?. So to get a domain name, you need a registrar. ICANN (Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers) assigns a registrar for every domain. Verisign handles.com, for example. In turn, Verisign authorizes other companies to act as registrars, like GoDaddy. Different registrars offer different prices and different web services.

Next, you need to search to see if is is available. If it is, you can buy the domain. Almost

ZTE Grand X IN Intelpowered ICS smartphone to launch next month

It was all getting a little quiet on Intel-powered smartphone front, but now ZTE's decided to refresh its not-so-elderly Grand X with a Medfield processor and Ice Cream Sandwich. Part of ZTE's showing here at IFA, it's the company's first Android 4.0 device, running on an Atom Z2460. Expect HSPA+ speeds up to 21Mbps, alongside some familiar Grand X specs. This includes a 4.3-inch 960 x 540 screen, while this model now packs an 8-megapixel camera and 1,650mAh battery. ZTE's latest redesign will arrive in Europe at the start of next month -- and we'll be tracking down a model in a Berlin later today.

Wall Street ends flat, volume among lightest of year

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks ended little changed in another day of scarce activity on Tuesday after mixed economic data gave investors little reason to shift their focus from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's speech on Friday.

The Fed chief is scheduled to address a conference of central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and could announce new measures to boost growth. While Bernanke is expected to keep alive expectations for a third round of major bond buying by the Fed, or quantitative easing, he could keep markets guessing about the actual timing.

Volume was among the lightest of the year after Monday's lightest trading in 2012. August is a slow season, and investors mostly stayed on the sidelines, anticipating Bernanke's speech.

"I don't think you can read a lot from what's going on in the market right now," said John Fox, co-manager of the FAM Value Fund, in Cobleskill, New York. "Because there's nothing going on, everyone is waiting for the speech on Friday."

The latest sign of slowing in the global economy added to expectations for more central bank stimulus. Japan cut its assessment of economic growth, citing a deceleration in U.S. and Chinese demand for Japanese exports.

U.S. consumer confidence unexpectedly weakened in August to its lowest in nine months as Americans turned more pessimistic about the short-term outlook, according to the Conference Board.

But in another report, the S&P/Case Shiller composite index of 20 metropolitan areas showed U.S. home prices rose for a fifth consecutive month, a sign of slow improvement in the housing sector.

Among the day's biggest gainers, Lexmark International Inc jumped 13.7 percent to $21.62 after it said it would stop making inkjet printers, cut about 1,700 jobs, and focus on its more profitable imaging and software businesses.

The NYSEArca computer hardware index <.hwi> rose 1.2 percent. Shares of Hewlett Packard , which has a substantial portion of inkjet sales, were down 1.8 percent at $16.90.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was down 21.68 points, or 0.17 percent, at 13,102.99. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> slipped 1.14 points, or 0.08 percent, at 1,409.30. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> edged down 3.95 points, or 0.13 percent, at 3,077.14.

Volume was 4.60 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and the NYSE MKT, compared with Monday's 2012 low 4.46 billion shares. The year-to-date average is about 6.6 billion.

The S&P 500 has been pinned in a fairly tight range over the last three weeks, finding a support level at 1,400 while also unable to convincingly pierce the April high of 1,422.38, which has acted as a resistance point. The index has been unable to muster a move of at least 1 percent in either direction since August 3.

Among other gainers, PVH Corp raised its full-year earnings outlook for the third time this year as it expects its European business to grow and its flagship Tommy Hilfiger brand to remain popular with shoppers. Shares climbed 4.8 percent to $92.77.

Movado Group Inc shares were up 17.4 percent at $35.36 after hitting an all-time high of $36.11. The watchmaker reported a higher second-quarter profit and raised its full-year earnings forecast for the second time.

Advancers outpaced decliners on the NYSE by about 4 to 3 and on the Nasdaq by about 14 to 9.

Tax Benefits for Your Retirement Nest Egg ? Horizon Bank blog

Many Americans dream of being able to have a financially secure retirement. We all want to be able to stop working and continue to live the lifestyle we?ve worked so many years to achieve.

The best tools available to help achieve a successful retirement plan are tax-favored vehicles including: company retirement plans (if offered) and Individual Retirement Accounts (both traditional and Roth).

All IRAs allow for tax deferral. Tax Deferral means that you do not have to pay taxes on any investment growth, income earned, or capital gains for any investments each year within your IRA. This allows your investments to grow and compound at a much faster rate than any typical savings account.

For all qualified retirement accounts, you will have to pay ordinary income tax at some point in time. Who determines when you pay? You!

For traditional plans, you receive a tax benefit today by not having to pay ordinary income tax on qualifying amounts. But when you retire and begin taking these funds out for living expenses, it?s time to pay Uncle Sam ordinary income taxes on how much you?ve withdrawn. The balance remaining in the account continues to grow tax deferred.

For Roth plans, the tax man collects today. You pay ordinary income tax at your current rate. There is no tax benefit today for Roth contributions (unless you meet the qualifications for the Tax Savers Credit). However, the wonderful feature is that if you meet all qualifying criteria for the Roth account, all initial funds and all growth is able to be withdrawn tax-free. That?s right, if you follow all of the Roth rules, then you never have to pay taxes again on your contributions or any gains!

Once you have identified which accounts are available to you and fit your tax planning objectives, the key is to SAVE, SAVE, SAVE! Save as much as you can each year to maximize the amounts qualified for this preferential tax treatment as well as have the most available for your future self.

For additional assistance your local Horizon Trust Officer or existing tax preparer can assist you with reviewing which IRA planning tool makes the best sense for your situation.

GamingApps.com Domain Name Sold For $5,000

Sites include GamingApps.com , thisdomainnameisforsale.com . Published on August 27th, 2012. Written by Daniel Renfro.

There are various domain name-selling companies on the Internet today. Companies such as these bring in a lot of revenue and are very successful due to the popularity of doing business online. Just as there are many different domain name-selling companies to choose from when looking into purchasing a domain name, there are thousands of domain names to pick from also. This allows businesses to choose a domain name that best fits their company and the products or services they are involved in, and it also allows them to find a domain name that fits into their budget. Some domain names can be pretty pricey, even costing from 5 to 6 figures, whereas others are only a couple hundred dollars. Though prices may cause businesses to hesitate it is definitely worth the expense since the Internet is such a convenient and popular place to do business these days.

Here is the list of domain names that have sold recently through ?this domain name is for sale.com?:

GamingApps.com $5,000, AntivirusApp.com $5,000,?MobileAntivirus.com $18,000, Flowers4Delivery.com $5,000, TeddyBearDelivery.com $4,000, Texus.com $1,800, CaliforniaMovingCompany.com $2,000, TheDogFoodCompany.com $2,000, BridalWearCompany.com $2,000, Creditcard101.com $2,000, UAElawfirm $300, ScienceFutures.com $300, ScienceHacks.com $300,?BahrainTrading.com $300, AntiNicotine.com $400, ArticleBlogs.com $300, CellphoneExchange.com $1,500.

Domain names can be pretty expensive, costing some companies 6 figure amounts, while others are more affordable and cost only a couple hundred dollars. However despite the cost, the domain name would eventually pay for itself if the company has a successful and growing business.

Though it is obvious from the above list that domain names can be quite pricey sometimes, depending on who they are purchased from and the URL itself, it is a wise decision for businesses of all kinds and sizes to consider moving their business online and purchasing a domain name. So many companies are doing business online nowadays and the domain name would more than likely pay for itself in the near future.

Pennsylvania judge halts Harrisburg's incinerator debt payments

(Reuters) - A Pennsylvania judge on Monday ordered Harrisburg, the state's cash-strapped capital, to suspend debt service payments on its troubled incinerator and to implement a 1 percent tax hike.

Commonwealth Court Judge Bonnie Leadbetter ruled that the city should not make any further debt payments on its waste-to-energy incinerator - which helped plunge the city into at least $320 million in debt - until further notice.

An attorney for Harrisburg's state-appointed receiver, William Lynch, said during a court hearing last week that the city would be $500,000 in the hole if it made a $3.4 million debt service payment due in September.

Leadbetter also ordered the city council to enact a 1 percent hike on residents' earned income within 15 days. The increase, which city council members were fighting, is temporary but effective immediately upon implementation, for at least one year.

Revenue generated from the tax hike can only be used to fund essential city services, she ruled.

The tax hike was a key provision of Lynch's recovery plan for the city, which is under state oversight. Leadbetter is overseeing the implementation of the plan.

"We hope this will lead to some real cooperation with City Council as we go forward," Lynch said in a statement.

Leadbetter shot down one other provision of the plan that called for the city to hire a communications director at an annual salary of $75,000.

Recognition of prior learning and the role of quality assurance ...

This report is based on the ENQA workshop ?Quality Assurance and Qualifications Frameworks: exchanging good practice?, which took place in Dublin, Ireland, on 9-10 February 2012 and presents articles on themes such as the state of development of qualifications frameworks, the role of agencies in the self-certification process, and the meaning of qualifications frameworks in external quality assurance. Download the report Quality Assurance and Qualifications Frameworks: Exchanging Good Practice.
Recognition of prior learning and the role of quality assurance agencies. Accreditation of prior learning in France as a case study, by Teresa S?nchez Chaparro, Programme Manager, Commission des Titres d?Ing?nieur (CTI), France, p.30-35.
Introduction

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) implies the formal acknowledgement of learning acquired in a non-formal context (usually coming from experience unrelated to an academic context). This process is generally seen as an important tool for progressing in the fields of lifelong learning and continuing education, two preeminent objectives of the Lisbon agenda. RPL is normally conducted by educational institutions or professional certification bodies. In the case of certifications issued by educational institutions, this process provides recognition of a certain academic level (according to a national qualifications framework) in view of two main objectives: increasing labour market recognition and/or enabling access to a higher level of studies.
Because of its potential role in the fields of employment and social promotion, RPL practices are politically sensitive and are normally part of an explicit political agenda which responds to national objectives. This political dimension must be taken into account by quality assurance agencies as a starting point in order to develop quality assurance criteria in this field. The answer to the question: what makes a sound RPL process? is fundamentally dependent on the pursued goals and cannot in any way be affronted from an exclusively technical perspective.
An ENQA break-out group session devoted to this subject within the workshop on Quality assurance and qualifications frameworks has enabled to confront different national realities and policies regarding RPL and, in consequence, different quality assurance roles and practices among the different QAA represented. In this paper, the French experience in the field of prior learning recognition, or in French terms, validation des acquis de l?exp?rience (VAE), is presented as a case study which enables to illustrate some important general issues. After analysing this case, the last section of this paper tries to reproduce the main issues raised during the discussion held at ENQA?s workshop break-out session on recognition of prior learning, and draw some conclusions as to the possible role of quality assurance agencies.
Recognition of prior learning in France (validation des acquis de l?exp?rience- VAE)
National context

RPL processes, as they are practiced today in France, were established by the 2002 Law on social modernization with the name of VAE (validation des acquis de l?exp?rience - Law n? 2002-73 du 17 janvier 2002 de modernisation sociale). This law establishes an individual right to the recognition of professional experience in the acquisition of an academic title or a diploma. This recognition device was established within the following context:
? The existence of a significant population sector with a low or inexistent graduation level (According to the 1995 INSEE (Institut National de la Statistique et des Etudes Economiques- National Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies) employment survey, four out of ten workers in France didn?t have any formal qualification at the time). Regardless of their individual competences, this population sector was not recognised by the French labour market, and their professional and social ascension was, in practice, very difficult.
? Initial qualifications play a stronger role in France than in other countries (Anglo-Saxon countries, for example) in reference to social hierarchy. Some authors talk about a ?French structural fondness for qualifications? (TRYBY, Emmanuel; Accreditation of prior experiential learning and the development of higher education; European journal of vocational training, N? 46- 2009/1-ISSN 1977-0219) or even about a ?French dictatorship of qualifications? (M?haut Philippe, Lecourt Anne-Juliette (2007) ; The accreditation of prior learning experience in France : A good start, to be continued ; Discussion paper). A 2005 study shows that over 73% of job offers in France, regardless of the age of the candidate, mention the number of years of study and the qualification required (in Great Britain, this rate goes down to 27% - Marchal Emmanuelle, Rieucau G?raldine (2003) ? Candidat de plus de 40 ans non dipl?m? ou d?butant s?abstenir ?, Connaissance de l?emploi n?11, CEE). Different studies also show that the possession of a diploma enables a quicker and more stable access to the job market in France. The fact of having a diploma has also an impact on the stability of the contract (with a much higher rate of indefinite contracts for graduates). Finally, the possession of an initial academic qualification plays, at least since Napoleonic times, an important symbolic role in the meritocratic France, where initial qualifications are one of the axes for social differentiation.
? A dual training system which establishes a sharp distinction between initial training and continuous and vocational education training (CVET). As an example, only around 1,5 % of continuous education actions in 1996 resulted in an academic title or diploma (again from the studies by the CEREQ).
The new VAE system established by the 2002 law tries to profit from the major role played by initial diplomas in France in order to attain two main objectives:
? Facilitate social promotion and secure career paths
? Build a bridge between the CVET system and the initial training system.
Brief description of the French VAE system

The VAE process enables an individual to get all or part of a certification (diploma or professional qualification certificate) based on his/her professional experience (salaried, non-salaried, or voluntary). This experience, which must be related to the intended certification, is validated by a panel. If the VAE process leads to an academic qualification, it is directly assessed and recognised by the higher education institution.
The diploma obtained has exactly the same validity as a diploma obtained by an ordinary study path. All diplomas, certificates, and professional qualifications are available through VAE. They are registered in a public registry (RNCP- National Register of Professional Certifications, http://www.rncp.cncp.gouv.fr/). Academic diplomas registered in RNCP cover a variety of levels, from secondary education to the masters level. All engineering degrees (masters level diplomas) are included by law in the RNCP and have thus the obligation of delivering their diplomas also through VAE.
The diagram below shows the main steps of the VAE process and the main actors involved. Several structures at the regional and national level have been put in place in order to provide general information on the procedure and to orientate candidates towards a suitable certification. Once the certification is chosen, a first check on the admissibility of the request (mainly the verification of the candidate having the three years of relevant experience required) is conducted. After passing the admissibility check, the candidate must prepare an application which will be finally examined by a mixed panel composed of academic and professional members. The panel may issue a full or a partial validation. In the latter case, the jury can propose the necessary pedagogical complements (courses, internships, and so on). There is no time limit for obtaining these additional competences.
The VAE process in engineering higher education in France: The role of CTI

The main mission of CTI is to conduct accreditation of engineering programmes in France. CTI supervises all paths for obtaining an engineering diploma, including VAE. All engineering institutions must include a specific section concerning VAE in their selfassessment report in view of programme accreditation (VAE procedures, number of accreditations issued, number of candidates, cost of the process, type of compensatory measures proposed, etc.).
CTI has developed a set of criteria regarding the way VAE procedures should be conducted. These criteria are gathered in the document R?f?rences et Orientations (References and Guidelines- available at www.cti-commission.fr). The quality criteria
applied are coherent with the political goals established at the national level. In consequence, the criteria have been developed under the assumption that VAE is basically a beneficial procedure, with a strong potential to boost employment and social advancement. Engineering institutions in France are sometimes accused of being elitists, and VAE is considered by CTI as one of the devices which can be employed to foster social diversity in this environment.
The legal obligation for all HEIs to establish VAE processes has also had some methodological benefits at the national level, in the sense that it has been a major driver to formalise the competence-based approach within French higher education institutions. Some engineering institutions in France are reluctant to deliver their diplomas through VAE, as they think that the educational value of the VAE is lower than a classical diploma and hence could degrade the value of their academic certificates. Being able to articulate a VAE procedure that ensures the same level of exigency as in the standard path is indeed a crucial issue for CTI.
At the other end of the spectrum, some higher education institutions could take this practice as a business opportunity. The fact that they can deliver a ?partial validation? followed by a recommendation on pedagogical complementary elements could encourage engineering institutions to use VAE in order to fill their continuous education programmes. CTI is aware of this potential conflict of interest and tries to be vigilant in order to prevent abuse.
As far as accreditation is concerned, CTI has tried to adopt a balanced position, which respects the specific policies of each institution with regards to VAE but, at the same time, tries to ensure a fair implementation of these recognition processes. The main accreditation criteria applied by CTI are:
? Certification: the diploma delivered must be strictly the same as that delivered through other learning paths.
? Professional outcomes of the programme: engineering institutions must adequately formalise the outcomes of their programmes in a way that they can serve the certification of professional competences. These descriptions must be made public and transmitted to the National Registry of Professional Certifications.
? Evaluation procedures and criteria: the procedures and evaluation criteria must be clear and public. They must guarantee an equitable treatment of all candidates.
The evaluation criteria should be at the same exigency level than the ones used to attribute the diploma through other paths.
? Information and guidance to the candidate: institutions must be transparent and provide sufficient information to possible VAE candidates. They must put in place (or offer) guidance and counselling to the candidates throughout the process.
? Accreditation panel: the VAE panel must include academic and professional members (other than the external lecturers of the programme). It must include some members from the jury that delivers the ordinary diploma in order to ensure a same exigency level, but other than that, the composition must be substantially different and adapted to understand the specific challenges of this track.
Conclusions

Recognition of prior learning is implemented at various levels and with various objectives in the different European countries. Whereas the RPL process in some countries (such as Ireland, Germany or the Netherlands) mainly
involves considering the learner?s prior formal or informal learning in order to gain entry to further study or to gain credit or exemption towards a degree, in other countries, such
as France, RPL is used as a major route to award an academic degree.
The case of France?s VAE is indeed an extreme case. VAE enables the acquisition of a complete academic degree through the exclusive validation of professional experience. The VAE legislation does not limit the number of certifications obtained by a particular person. In France, it is hence possible to get up to the master level without having any formal academic qualification. As an example, we can examine the case of a French citizen, who left school without his secondary education degree and was subsequently able to obtain 6 academic diplomas through VAE (including a bachelor in literary Arabic) up to the master level. This person is currently in charge of VAE processes at a prestigious engineering institution (http://orientactuel.centre-inffo.fr/Hassane-Akka-de-bac-3-a-bac-5-en.html).
The French approach to RPL raised some critical voices among QA colleagues during the ENQA workshop break-out group discussion. Whereas the break-out group participants could easily accept that one can arrive to the same level of professional competence through working experience as via an academic degree, it is more difficult to argue that this path could be equivalent in terms of methodological skills and analytic capacity. There is also an experiential dimension associated to formal higher education which definitely plays a role in building a competence profile.
The case of Hong Kong (http://www.hkqf.gov.hk/guie/HKQF_intro.asp) provides an example of how RPL processes can be established without mixing the notions of level and profile. In Hong Kong the recognition of professional competences is made by a number of specific agencies with close links to industry. Candidates obtain recognition of a certain academic level and the right to be admitted to a higher level of studies, but they do not obtain an academic degree.
However, the French VAE should be understood in the light of the French specific national context, namely a number of urgent structural problems which needed to be addressed in order to improve competitivity and social equity, and the special role played by initial qualifications.
RPL practices are indeed politically sensitive and highly dependent on the context. Agencies must explicitly assume this political dimension in order to define what role to play regarding RPL processes. The following questions should be posed:
? Is RPL an important issue in my specific national and political context? Is it being practiced at a significant level?
? Are there any risks of derive in the way HEIs are implementing these recognition processes?
Depending of the answer to these questions, the quality assurance agency may adopt a more or less active role. In the case of France, RPL practices are politically important and there are indeed certain risks - such as a general resistance of institutions to VAE; conflicts of interest to be avoided; and certain methodological aspects associated to the competences approaches - which justify, as we have seen, an active role from the national accreditation agency.

Penn St. riot ends aspiring Army officer's dream

Stints in jail. Hefty fines and restitution. Clouded futures. The consequences of their bad behavior have been steep for the Penn State students who took to the streets and rioted in the chaotic aftermath of Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno's firing last November.

Perhaps none have learned a harder lesson than Justin Strine, a young man from central Pennsylvania whose planned career as an Army officer is over before it began ? the casualty of his own split-second decision to put his hands on a news van, and a judicial system that considered him as guilty as classmates who did far worse that dark night in State College.

As the fall semester gets under way Monday, Strine has returned to campus, along with 15 other students found to have taken part in a nationally televised riot that caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage and embarrassed Penn State.

As he resumes his studies, nothing's the same for the 21-year-old from Hummelstown. He spent part of his summer in jail. Far worse: He's been kicked out of ROTC, his dream of carrying on his family's proud military tradition now out of reach.

"I'm losing everything I worked my entire life for," Strine said.

Strine's father, a career soldier, questions whether that's a just result.

"I had to stand by and watch my son plead guilty to something he didn't do," said Jim Strine.

Penn State sanctioned 32 students for their involvement in the riot, suspending 10 of them from one to three semesters and giving probation to the rest, university spokeswoman Lisa Powers said. Dozens of students were criminally charged, as well, and the guilty pleas have piled up over the last several months.

An estimated 4,000 to 5,000 people poured into downtown State College on Nov. 9 after the Penn State board of trustees abruptly and unexpectedly fired Paterno ? the beloved football coach who led Penn State for nearly 46 seasons ? and removed President Graham Spanier over the Jerry Sandusky child sex-abuse scandal.

What began as a peaceful protest of Paterno's unceremonious dismissal quickly turned ugly as a "riotous mob," as State College police would later call it, threw bottles and rocks, damaged cars, and tore down light posts and street signs.

Strine was in his off-campus apartment when he learned of Paterno's firing. He and a few friends decided to head downtown.

It was a rare misstep in what had been a slow, steady climb toward the officer ranks.

Strine's father is a helicopter pilot and instructor whose 28-year career has taken him to Iraq and Afghanistan. His grandfather is a retired Air Force flight surgeon. His brother and sister, aunt and uncle, cousins ? all serve or have served. So it wasn't a surprise when Strine began plotting his own military career as an adolescent, reading the autobiographies of famed Army officers like Norman Schwarzkopf and Colin Powell.

At Penn State, Strine threw himself into ROTC as well as his studies, making the dean's list and spending the summer at Fort Benning, Ga., learning to jump out of airplanes. His goal: to be a pilot like his father.

"He was a good cadet," Jim Strine said.

A good cadet who made a bad decision the night of Nov. 9.

Strine had driven himself and a couple friends to the State College commercial district, where they joined thousands of other protesters. At one point Strine and his friend, Christina Assainte, found themselves in a large crowd moving toward a WTAJ-TV news van, where vandals were pelting it with rocks.

To the rippling chants of "Flip it! Flip it!" two young men approached the side of the van, motioning others to join them, a video recording shows. That set off a frenzied rush toward the van, and within seconds a large group started to push.

A second wave of spectators then pressed toward the front of the van, perhaps to get a better view. Strine and Assainte were in the front of that group.

With the vehicle already on two wheels and going over, Strine placed his palms on the hood. Four seconds later, the van was on its side. But that's all it took for police and prosecutors to charge him with felony counts of riot and criminal mischief ? the same charges filed against students who did the actual pushing.

"I always felt I was on a good path, and all the sudden I'm being made into a criminal. It was shocking to me they wouldn't even hear me out and let me explain that yes, I was there and shouldn't have been, but I wasn't this person they are making me out to be," Strine said. "No one ever looked at me as an individual. They looked at me as 5,000 Penn State rioters."

Terrified of being branded a felon, Strine agreed to plead guilty to reduced misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and criminal mischief. He served 30 days in jail ? getting out Aug. 4 ? and will either be on parole or probation until 2015.

The consequences didn't end there. Penn State suspended Strine for a semester, and he was booted from ROTC and will have to repay every dime of his scholarship money, a total of $34,000. He also owes $8,500 in court costs, fines and restitution.

Strine said he knows he never should have left his apartment that night, never should have been in the vicinity of the van, never should have laid a finger on its hood.

"The van was already going over. It was so crazy, it was mayhem, and in that moment you stop thinking," Strine said. "I know I wasn't completely blameless. I was there, I touched the van and that was wrong. That's why I was happy to do community service for Penn State. But the criminal justice system went overboard."

His father said he's not seeking to minimize or excuse Justin's involvement, but contended the district attorney's office was far too aggressive ? and his son's punishment far too severe.

"He owns something in this," Jim Strine said. "He just doesn't own what he's got."

Centre County District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller did not return multiple calls and emails seeking information about her office's handling of Strine's case or the other riot cases.

Messages left with State College police Chief Tom King were not returned.

Lt. Col. Ken Weiland, commander of Penn State's Army ROTC program, declined to comment Monday on Strine's removal from the program but cited military regulations that list a multitude of reasons why a cadet could be kicked out.

Powers, the Penn State spokeswoman, said any student who goes through the university disciplinary process can contest the charges or sanctions.

"Justin accepted responsibility and the sanctions in the disciplinary conference, and did not contest them through either avenue that was afforded to him," she said, adding that Penn State carefully assessed each student's culpability, the impact of the crime on the community, and other factors before imposing punishment.

Strine said he didn't contest the charges because he wouldn't have been permitted an attorney, and his testimony before the school could have been used against him in the criminal courts. He didn't challenge the sanctions because Penn State warned him that if he did, he could wind up being penalized more severely. And he said he was never told that a suspension would cost him his spot in ROTC.

Assainte, who was with Strine during the riot, said he had no criminal intent that night. She said he got a raw deal.

"I remember him saying, 'All I wanted to do was serve my country, and now I can't because of one little mistake that was caught on tape.' One lapse of judgment and he gets all this thrown at him? I felt so awful," she said. "I just think what happened was really, really unfair."

Network Marketing Articles Are Available Free So Don't Spend Another

Mistakes Are Costing You! Learn To Stop?Making ALL 189 Of Them!

Struggling With WordPress? 100+ Step-By-Step Videos Now Available!

Posted by Administrator on Aug 25, 2012 in Uncategorized | Comments Off

Researching the methods required to succeed in network marketing is essential. These tips can help you to spread the message of your network marketing.

When you have learned from your mistakes, you are in an excellent position to move forward to success. It is crucial to admit to your failures and understand how to correct them. A better understanding of how and why you failed lets you know which methods are not working, so you can focus on using the ones that do.

There are lots of people who have the desire to share the things that they?ve learned in network marketing, that is why it is important that you are always ready to listen to what they have to say. One of the best ways to do this nowadays is through podcasts. You are likely to find some interesting and applicable advice if you sample a few of the different casts available.

TIP! Be honest with yourself about your intentions. Perhaps you are only interested in approaching network marketing in a casual, informal way.

When researching the network marketing company options, choose one with products that are of personal interest to you. Your own personal like or dislike for a product will show to potential customers, and affect your selling ability.

Create a monthly budget. If you want your business to be running to the best of its ability, then you need to know what sort of monetary investment is going to be required on your part. Remember that you cannot skimp on the budget if you want to see a profit. If you cannot invest money into your business or you are not willing to, you will not get far as a business owner.

Make it a point to find out how popular your users are in their networks. When presenting your products, make it so they would be happy to let their friends in on your products. If you?re fairly certain that someone isn?t going to purchase any of your products, don?t bother talking to him or her unless that person has his own extensive network.

TIP! Help from Internet sources like blogs and network marketing forums can be a smart way to keep yourself up-to-date and informed about the industry. Forums are a great place to start as you will find field experts, as well as beginners like yourself, who will be looking to share their real life network marketing experiences.

Keep your meeting to 60 minutes or less. The length of a business meeting often indicates how complicated the topic approached will be. By abbreviating your meeting, you can show your interested client that your system is straightforward.

Patience is required at first but you will see result grow exponentially when success does occur. A lot of amateurs allow themselves to become discouraged if they do not meet their goals early in the game. When you first begin your network marketing campaign, it will be slow; however, this is the most crucial time so don?t give up. The networking builds slowly over time and will eventually gather speed over the long term.

If you have decided to embark upon a network marketing campaign, it is important to consider the overall compensation package that is available to you and whom ever you have partnered or teamed up with. Being aware of the compensation that is included in your agreement will help you figure out if it is worth the time you are investing or if you should look into other opportunities.

TIP! If you truly want to be a successful network marketer, you really must want to help others succeed, as well. If your efforts at marketing are geared towards helping people with your offerings, your profits will rise.

The most important thing you can do in network marketing is to remember that it is a business, and it should be treated like one. If you expect to work just a few hours a week and earn a lot of money, you will not be successful. Network marketing, like any other field, requires a significant time and work investment. Keep a promise to yourself of working hard everyday, and that will make you a successful network marketer.

Consistently use a ongoing email database to achieve success with network marketing. It is possible to build or purchase a marketing list, and you want it to be as large as possible to ensure the success of your business.

TIP! Follow what others are doing to succeed. Look to the organization?s leaders for inspiration and motivation.

To succeed in network marketing, you must learn the most effective methods and then apply them to your business. If you know how to market by networking, you will see a rise in your profits. Use this advice to make your network marketing message more far-reaching

Apple awarded $1B in Samsung patent case

Lee Jae Won / Reuters

Apple's iPhone 4s, left, and Samsung's Galaxy S III.

?

By Gerry Shih, Reuters

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Apple scored a sweeping legal victory over Samsung Friday as a jury found the Korean company had copied critical features of the hugely popular iPhone and iPad and awarded the U.S. company $1.051 billion in damages.

The verdict -- which came much sooner than expected -- could lead to an outright ban on sales of key Samsung products and will likely solidify Apple's dominance of the exploding mobile computing market.

A number of companies that sell smartphones based on Google's Android operating system may now face further legal challenges from Apple, a company that is already among the largest and most profitable in business history.

Shares in Apple, which just this week became the biggest company ever by market value, climbed almost 2 percent to a record high of $675 in after-hours trade.

Brian Love, a Santa Clara law school professor, described it as a crushing victory for Apple: "This is the best-case scenario Apple could have hoped for."

The jury deliberated less than three days before delivering the verdict on seven Apple patent claims and five Samsung patent claims -- suggesting that the nine-person panel had little difficulty in concluding that Samsung had copied the iPhone and the iPad.

Billions of dollars in future sales hang in the balance.

Apple's charges that Samsung copied its designs and features are widely viewed as an attack on Google ?and its Android software, which drives Samsung's devices and has become the most-used mobile software.

Apple and Samsung, two companies that sell more than half the world's smartphones and tablets, have locked legal horns in several countries this year.

Earlier on Friday, a South Korean court found that both companies shared blame, ordering Samsung to stop selling 10 products including its Galaxy S II phone and banning Apple from selling four different products, including its iPhone 4.

But the trial on Apple's home turf -- the world's largest and most influential technology market -- is considered the most important.

The fight began last year when Apple sued Samsung in multiple countries, accusing the South Korean company of slavishly copying the iPhone and iPad. Samsung countersued. Apple had sought more than $2.5 billion in damages from Samsung, which has disputed that figure.

The companies are rivals, but also have a $5 billion-plus supply relationship. Apple is Samsung's biggest customer for microprocessors and other parts central to Apple's devices.

Near clean sweep
The jury spent most of August in a packed federal courtroom in San Jose -- just miles from Apple's headquarters in Cupertino -- listening to testimony, examining evidence and watching lawyers from both sides joust about seven Apple patents, five Samsung patents, and damage claims.

Jurors received 100 pages of legal instructions from U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh Tuesday prior to hearing the closing arguments from attorneys.

Lawyers from both tech giants used their 25 hours each of trial time to present internal emails, draw testimony from designers and experts, and put on product demonstrations and mockups to convince the jury.

At times, their questions drew testimony that offered glimpses behind the corporate facade, such as profit margins on the iPhone and Samsung's sales figures in the United States.

From the beginning, Apple's tactic was to present what it thought was chronological evidence of Samsung copying its phone.

Juxtaposing pictures of phones from both companies and internal Samsung emails that specifically analyzed the features of the iPhone, Apple's attorneys accused Samsung of taking shortcuts after realizing it could not keep up.

Samsung's attorneys, on the other hand, maintained Apple had no sole right to geometric designs such as rectangles with rounded corners. They called Apple's damage claim "ridiculous" and urged the jury to consider that a verdict in favor of Apple could stifle competition and reduce choices for consumers.

The trial produced its share of drama and heated moments. Lawyers routinely bickered over legal matters in the jury's absence, filed rafts of paperwork to thwart each other's courtroom strategy, and sometimes even resorted to public relations tactics to make their views known.

Below, CNBC's Jon Fortt?reports?from outside the courtroom following the jury's verdict. He discusses a likely Samsung appeal and notes "This is now full-on war."

When I was growing up in the 60?s and 70?s, I loved watching TV shows with ?secret agents?. I watched shows such as Mod Squad, Man from Uncle, Get Smart and Dragnet and I used to tell myself that someday, when I grew up, I would be a secret agent. Little did I know that someday, in a way, I would become like a detective. However, instead of racing around in fancy cars in big cities, my investigations would take me to libraries, museums, archives and cemeteries, searching among the records of those long gone. A Southern Sleuth is a blog about my search for my southern roots.

I have been actively researching for 17 years primarily in the areas of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas and even the southern portion of Colorado. When my nose isn?t in a quarterly or other genealogy book or publication, I am researching or attending a genealogy conference, institute, online class or webinar . I obtained a bachelor?s degree in Family and Child Psychology from Brigham Young University and I am currently pursuing a certificate from the National Institute for Genealogical Studies. Presently I teach a local genealogy class.

For years, when my husband and I would go to antique stores and flea markets, I would see boxes and shelves of old family photos, and it would make me sad to think that so many of them had left the hands of their families. Earlier this year, I stumbled across the 48-Hour Ephemera Challenge set up by Caroline Pointer at her own blog.? The challenge is to take a weekend and do online research in order to find the family of a mystery photo or postcard.? I began to wonder if I could do that on my own ? surely my genealogy research muscles had developed to the point where I could at least find a family contact.? So I went to a local antique store, bought some old photos, came home and got to work.? Within two hours, I had matched a photo with a family, and sent an e-mail.? I got a response, and a new hobby was born!? It?s addicting and very gratifying when I contact someone who has perhaps never seen a photo of an ancestor.? I told friends about it, and my husband suggested I blog about it.? I saw that several other folks had the same idea, and decided to take the plunge myself.? So I did, and here?s the result ?
