Dog owners have been asked to hand over their pets' poo to the University of Calgary for a scientific study.

6,000 letters of invitation have been sent asking for a sample of their dogs' faeces, CNews reports.

The University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine aims to find out what types of parasites are in the city's biggest dog parks.

Dr Alessandro Massolo, the head of the study, explained: "We would like to understand how and if the dogs get infected or if they infect the coyotes while they're walking in the parks."

Dog owners will also be asked to fill in an online survey.

In exchange for sending in the samples, owners will receive the results of the lab analysis for free.

This analysis would normally cost in excess of ?64 ($100) and will provide detailed information on the dog's health.
