Carol Carr showed all the signs of colorectal cancer seven years ago, but doctors thought the 44-year-old Glen Burnie woman was too young to have the disease and never tested her for it.

Instead, they said her diarrhea, vomiting, cramping, iron deficiency and extreme fatigue were more likely caused by the flu, anxiety and even a brain disorder.

Treatments for those illnesses failed and Carr got so sick she had to stop working. When she finally saw a specialist who ordered a colonoscopy she was suffering from Stage II colorectal cancer. The test found a mass that blocked most of her colon and had grown through her intestinal wall.

Misdiagnoses like Carr?s are becoming more common as a disease historically associated with people older than 50 is increasingly inflicting a younger population.

While overall rates of colorectal cancer have been dropping since the 1980s, cases in people under age 50 have been slowly, but steadily rising, research has found. The biggest increases come in people in their 40s.

Overall rates have been declining by about 3 percent per year in men and by 2.3 percent per year in women, according to the American Cancer Society. But colorectal cancer rates in people age 18 to 49 increased 2.1 percent between 1998 and 2007.

While younger patients still make up a sliver of people who get the cancer, researchers and scientists are paying more attention before the problem worsens. It was a topic of discussion at a conference last week for the Colon Cancer Alliance in Baltimore.

Dr. Y. Nancy You, a surgical oncologist from Texas who spoke at the conference, said that most research on colorectal cancer skews toward older people. More wide-scale research on younger people needs to be done to better understand the new patterns of the disease, she said.

?It?s hard to know whether the current research is really applicable to the younger population,? she said.

Nobody really knows why the cancer is increasing in younger people.

Doctors believe lifestyle, including bad eating habits, lack of exercise and obesity, is part of the problem. Some of the answer probably also lies in genetics and environmental factors, doctors said.

Better screening and testing have helped over time to curb the disease, which is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer. Doctors are able to detect and remove polyps, sack-like growths on the colon wall, before they manifest into cancer.

But guidelines generally call for screening people older than 50 and suggest younger people get tested only if they are showing signs of cancer and have a family history.

Even when younger patients have signs such as anemia and digestive complaints, doctors are more likely to attribute that to a medical problem other than cancer. Patients themselves may also wait to see a doctor because they might not connect the symptoms to cancer.

?I flip-flopped from doctor to doctor and tried treatment after treatment that would work for six months and then stop,? said Eden Stotsky-Himelfarb, a nurse with the gastrointestinal surgical group at Johns Hopkins. She was diagnosed with stage 3 rectal cancer at age 26, but believes she was misdiagnosed for eight years. Stotsky-Himelfarb said she had a family history of cancer, including a grandfather who had colon cancer, that should have alerted doctors.

Carr is now 51 and cancer-free, but remembers the frustration of being misdiagnosed. The sales engineer had three-fourths of her colon removed. Like many colorectal cancer survivors, she still deals with bowel problems. She said doctors need to be more aware of the symptoms of the disease and patients should be more proactive as well.

?If patients are showing symptoms, they need to be tested no matter their age,? she said.

When they are finally diagnosed, the cancer in younger patients has usually progressed to a more advanced stage, making it more complicated and costly to treat, doctors said.

Dr. Laura Porter was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer at age 43 after experiencing several misdiagnoses. Training to become a doctor at the time, she was forced to drop out of her pediatric residency program after becoming sick. She would suffer two additional reoccurrences after her initial treatment.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The choreographer of a somber segment in the London Olympics opening ceremony said Saturday he's disappointed that NBC decided not to show it to an American audience.

Spectators were asked to display photos of loved ones who could not be there during the segment. The music, a hymn called "Abide With Me," was described in the ceremony's program as an "honest expression of the fear of approaching death."

NBC producers did not air it, instead showing American viewers Ryan Seacrest's interview with swimmer Michael Phelps.

"I am disappointed," said Londoner Akram Khan, who choreographed and danced in the segment. "I am really sad that I couldn't show the work in America, and that really upsets me, because I don't think it's any more or less than the other pieces. It brings to mind the question ... that maybe it's too truthful."

The ceremony's program describes the performance as dramatizing "the struggle between life and death using such powerful images of mortality as dust and the setting sun."

Some in the British press have interpreted the segment as being a tribute to victims of bomb attacks in July 2005 that killed 52 commuters and four suicide bombers on London's transit network. During the BBC live coverage of the ceremony, commentator Hazel Irvine made the connection while the dance was taking place: "The excitement of that moment in Singapore seven years ago when London won the games was tempered with great sorrow the very next day," when the terror attacks took place, she said.

NBC said it had no indication that the segment was a reference to the terrorist attacks.

Although in many places the ceremony was aired in full, NBC aired it on a tape-delayed basis and made editing changes. The network said there are often such production decisions when showing a taped version of a ceremony.

"Our program is tailored for the U.S. television audience," said NBC Sports spokesman Greg Hughes. "It's a credit to (ceremony director) Danny Boyle that it required so little editing."

Apple will be the top chip buyer this year because of the surge in demand for the company's products, enabling it to command lower prices and quicker delivery, IHS iSuppli said in research released on Wednesday.

The company's spending on chips will grow as competitors scale back or slow down spending on chips used in products such as computers, smartphones, tablets and other electronics, the research firm said.

Apple will spend an estimated US$28 billion on semiconductors this year, according to the numbers from iSuppli. That is much larger than second-place Samsung, which is expected to spend $14.9 billion, growing by 0.3 percent from last year.

There has been growing demand for Apple's iPad, iPhone and Mac computer products. Earlier this week, Apple said it sold 17 million iPads during the most recent fiscal quarter, growing by 84 percent from the same period a year ago. Apple's iPhone sales went up by 28 percent year-over-year to 26 million, while Mac sales went up 2 percent.

Apple dominates the electronics supply channel, and such large spending brings with it a guaranteed quota of supplies and the ability to dictate chip pricing and product roadmaps, said Myson Robles-Bruce, senior analyst for semiconductor spending and design activity at iSuppli, in a statement.

That provides competitive advantages for Apple over rivals, such as the ability to lower prices for products and faster and more reliably delivery, Myson Robles-Bruce said.

The scale of spending was a big element that helped major PC makers stabilize computer prices during the hard drive shortage resulting from the Thailand floods last year. Apple, Hewlett-Packard and Dell were able to stabilize PC prices as a larger chunk of hard drives were shipped out by storage companies to meet contract commitments, while smaller PC makers had to raise prices after acquiring hard drives at expensive prices from the open market. Large hardware companies usually stock up on components to be prepared in case of a demand surge for products.

Apple last year was one of the top buyer of NAND flash chips because of the growing demand for the company's mobile devices. Semiconductor numbers also count memory and wireless chips purchased by companies that go into mobile devices.

Apple is followed by Samsung, Hewlett-Packard and Dell. Apple and Samsung have benefitted from growing smartphone sales, while Hewlett-Packard and Dell deal mainly in servers and PCs, a market that is slowing down due to lower consumer spending and a growing interest in tablets. Tablets and smartphones dented worldwide PC shipments, which remained flat during the second quarter, according to research released by Gartner and IDC earlier this month. A name missing from iSuppli's list is Lenovo, which is the world's second largest PC maker.

Apple's spending on semiconductors will grow in coming years as the company moves into the television segment, iSuppli said. Apple offers the Apple TV set-top box with its homegrown processor, but the company is rumored to be developing a smart TV set.

But in the Americas Apple is expected to spend less on semiconductors than Cisco, which has major expenditure on set-top box and networking chips. Cisco was in seventh place behind Sony and Panasonic with expected expenditure of $8.4 billion on chips in 2012, a drop of 4.6 percent.

GENEVA (AP) ? One-off charges at Swiss drugmaker Roche Holding AG on Thursday pushed first-half net profits down 17 percent on the same time last year, but strong sales of cancer drugs and cost-cutting contributed to a rise in core operating figures.

The world's biggest manufacturer of cancer drugs, which reports earnings only every six months, said it expects group sales to grow by a low to mid-single digit rate provided exchange rates remain stable. It posted a drop in first-half profit to 4.26 billion Swiss francs ($4.3 billion), down from 5.15 billion francs in the comparable January-to-June period of 2011.

Roche said its net income also fell 14 percent, mainly due to one-off costs of 858 million francs from the closure of its Nutley, New Jersey, site, where Valium was developed. The former U.S. headquarters is to be closed by the end of 2013, in a money-saving consolidation of research and development programs that the company said would result in annual savings of 370 million francs a year.

The Basel, Switzerland-based company reported 530 million in additional global restructuring costs that result in part from putting a halt in May to its testing of dalcetrapib, an experimental cholesterol medicine that the company had hoped would help replace blockbusters such as Lipitor.

The drug was in expensive late-stage patient testing as a treatment to raise HDL, or so-called good cholesterol, in heart disease patients, but Roche said it decided to pull the plug on the recommendation of its independent data and safety monitoring board after an interim analysis found no "clinically meaningful" benefit.

But the drugmaker's core operating profit rose 7 percent in the first half of the year to 8.6 billion francs, and its first-half sales grew 3 percent to 22.4 billion francs ($22.55 billion). Those exceeded analysts' expectations for a 2.8 percent rise in core operating profit and 2 percent increase in sales growth.

The results were helped by the sales of established and new cancer drugs and recent cost-cutting drives.

The world's largest manufacturer of cancer drugs ? including its key drug Avastin for lung, brain and colorectal cancer ? benefits from having strong sellers whose patents are not due to expire soon. It posted the figures before the opening of the Zurich exchange. Its shares closed Wednesday at 167.90 francs ($169.03), up 4.81 percent since the start of the year, and were trading Thursday around the same level.

"Roche delivered strong operating results in the first half of 2012, driven by the solid performance of our existing portfolio as well as new product launches," Chief Executive Severin Schwan said. In a statement, he cited new cancer drugs Zelboraf, Erivedge and Perjeta and product pipeline with 72 new molecular entities in clinical development.

Schwan told reporters the company would look for small and medium-size acquisitions after the failure of its hostile bid for Illumina.

The company said it saw strong sales for cancer drugs such as Rituxan and Herceptin, which were overtaking sales of its best-selling Avastin after it lost approval in the U.S. for treating advanced breast cancer. Roche said its hepatitis drug Pegasys and rheumatoid arthritis treatment Actemra/RoActemra were doing well.

Roche also makes the influenza treatment Tamiflu, medical diagnostic tests, the Accu-Chek blood-sugar testing system, weight-loss drug Xenical and HIV medicine Fuzeon and Tarceva for pancreatic cancer.

About 1,000 jobs are to be lost in the United States, with those operations shifted to Basel and Schlieren, Switzerland, and to Penzberg, Germany. The company expects the consolidation to result in about 80 more jobs in Switzerland and Germany.

In 2011, Roche said it had more than 80,000 employees worldwide, more than a quarter of them in the United States.

SACRAMENTO -- The director of California's state parks system resigned Friday after officials discovered that her department had $54 million of unspent money in its accounts that it had not reported to the Department of Finance, even while the state said parks were so short of money that many needed to be closed.

Ruth Coleman, who had led the agency since 2003, stepped down, and the department's second-in-command, Acting Chief Deputy Director Michael Harris, was fired.

California Natural Resources Secretary John Laird said the state Attorney General's Office will be investigating and the Department of Finance will be conducting a comprehensive audit.

"It's our goal to make sure we get to the bottom of this," Laird said.

Laird said that the parks department had shielded from finance officials $20.4 million in an account that takes money from park entrance fees and concession contracts, as well as $33.5 million in a state fund for off-highway vehicle parks.

The disclosure comes at a politically difficult time for Gov. Jerry Brown, who pushed for more than a year to close 70 state parks -- one quarter of the entire park system -- to save $22 million as part of efforts to balance the state's budget.

"This is deeply disappointing because we just went to many partners around the state to get them to step up and cover the shortfall," Laird said. "I'm truly sorry about that."

The parks had been scheduled to close on July

1. But they didn't after dozens of private groups, cities and private companies came forward with donations.

Brown is asking voters to raise taxes in the November election, and polls show that the vote will be tight.

In an interview with the Mercury News on Friday, Coleman said she didn't know about the accounting problems until several days ago.

"I was not aware of this excess fund balance," she said. "We were beginning actions to correct it. But I do take responsibility for actions of staff."

Coleman said no taxpayer money is missing and that no funds were embezzled. Laird said a preliminary investigation showed the underreporting of the money began at least 12 years ago, under Gov. Gray Davis' former parks director, Rusty Areias.

"It was an action to keep it accumulating and not report it, not an action to spend it," Laird said.

He said he does not know how many people were aware of the money, or what their motivation was to keeping it hidden.

One parks department official who requested anonymity said it appears there was an error in accounting formulas years ago, and that as the money accumulated in the funds, staff members did not want to admit the mistake, possibly for fear that the finance department would take the money away.

The disclosure is the second major hit this month for the state parks department. On Sunday, the Sacramento Bee reported that former deputy parks director Manuel Lopez had approved $271,000 in vacation buybacks for parks staffers without authorization.

Coleman had demoted Lopez in October. Then he resigned under pressure in May.

On Friday, Coleman said Lopez was responsible for concealing the $54 million in unreported money.

"It was part of his job," she said. "He did not elevate it to my attention."

She said she learned of the problem when Lopez's successor, Aaron Robertson, uncovered it as part of an investigation into Lopez's actions. Calls to Lopez went unanswered Friday.

Court records show that Lopez, who lives in Granite Bay, filed for bankruptcy Wednesday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Sacramento. He reported $648,759 in assets and $707,748 in debts.

Friday's political fallout was swift.

Officials in Sonoma County pulled a $17 million parks funding measure planned for the county ballot in November. "I don't see how we can go forward," Caryl Hart, Sonoma County's regional parks director, told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.

Lawmakers in Sacramento said they were outraged.

"Where does it end? If one department can hoard $54 million for 12 years, who else is playing the same tricks of deceit and thievery?" said state Sen. Noreen Evans, D-Santa Rosa.

The chairman of the Assembly Budget Committee, Bill Blumenfield, D-Van Nuys, announced that his committee will open hearings into the parks funding irregularities in August.

Larry Gerston, a professor of political science at San Jose State University, called the issue "a black eye" that won't help the governor as he tries to build trust and support for his tax measure.

"It's hard to cry wolf and say you are out of everything when there are accounts like this lying around," Gerston said. "But rushing to judgment with so many questions unanswered is probably not a wise thing to do."

Coleman said she hopes the extra money will be used to help shore up the state's ailing parks system, which has a $1.3 billion maintenance backlog, rather than spent other ways by the Legislature.

California Natural Resources Agency Undersecretary Janelle Beland has been appointed by Brown as acting interim parks director.
