Original 2007 Google-powered iPhone maps app reportedly built by 2 engineers in 3 weeks

I've read more than I ever wanted to about maps this week, but this story about how the original, Google-powered Maps.app was built for the original iPhone caught my attention. Here it s from Nick Wingfield and Brian X. Chen of The New York Times:

Including a maps app on the first iPhone was not even part of the company?s original plan as the phone?s unveiling approached in January 2007. Just weeks before the event, Mr. Jobs ordered a mapping app to show off the capabilities of the touch-screen device.

Two engineers put together a maps app for the presentation in three weeks, said a former Apple engineer who worked on iPhone software, and who declined to be named because he did not want to speak publicly about his previous employer. The company hastily cut a deal with Google to use its map data.

2 engineers. 3 weeks. Apple has spent the last year or more and who knows how many engineering hours trying to roll a new maps app. It looks nice, but iOS 6 Maps currently locates my house in the middle of a park, when I try to find a place to get my car rust proofed -- because winter is coming -- I get the wrong area code and a phone number that consists only of 443-0, and if I want to take a train downtown I suddenly need to buy an app for that.

Yet in 2007 Google's data was good enough for 2 Apple engineers to make a decent, if feature limited iPhone app in 3 weeks. That just goes to show you how important data quality is for something like maps, and how little a nice looking interface matters when you can't find something on it.

Apple's CEO, Tim Cook has already apologized for the current status of iOS 6 Maps, but not for taking away Google's much more reliable data (even though the results seem to have been fairly predictable. I don't expect him to either, any more than I expect Apple to apologize for dumping Safari RSS or X11.

People keep saying iOS 6 Maps will get better just by virtue of all of us using it. I'll correct my house, and use Google to find and correct the phone number of the anti-rust place (no idea how I can help fix the lack of train information though...) But it's going to take a lot more than me, or any of us, simply feeding Apple data to make a proper maps app. It's going to take Apple investing as heavily and determinedly as Google has over the last decade, but doing it much, much, much faster. It's going to take tons of money and a Herculean effort. Apple has tons of money. Let's hope Cook and company are serious about putting in the effort.

The Times also repeats that Google was "blindsided" by Apple ditching their mapping data, which at this point is so ridiculous as to just make Google look disingenuous at best and deceptive at worst. If Apple still used Google's data, iOS 6 Maps would be fantastic. Google still has Google data. The moment Apple bought a mapping company in 2009 Google should have had an independent iOS app started as a skunkworks project. The moment iOS 6 Maps leaked before WWDC, Google should have been going full tilt. 2 engineers in 3 weeks? How does Google not have an iOS Maps app of their own ready yet?

JFK workers say security searches are rushed | Long Island ...

by The Associated Press

10:18 am Fri, September 28, 2012

JFK Airport security workers charge they?re often rushed to complete searches of planes for items left behind by passengers.

The New York Times says the allegations are contained in a formal complaint set to be filed with the Transportation Security Administration on Thursday.

The complaint is being filed by 30 of the 120 workers employed at Kennedy by a contractor, Global Elite Group of Garden City.

Their duties include looking for items left behind, including weapons, explosives and drugs. They?re supposed to open every overhead bin, flip down each tray table and search all back seat pockets.

Global Elite denied the allegations, saying they would never encourage or condone their employees to rush through their security duties. They also called it a ploy to unionize its workers.

MONEY? News ? Calling All Students to Step Up to the Challenge ...

OTTAWA, Sept. 27, 2012 /CNW/ ? Recycle My Cell, Canada?s recycling program for mobile devices and accessories, has officially kicked off the third annual Recycle My Cell Student Challenge. As the national sponsor of Waste Reduction Week in Canada (October 15-21), Recycle My Cell challenges all Canadian schools and post-secondary institutions to recycle as many old wireless devices as possible, including cell phones, smartphones, wireless PDAs, pagers, accessories and cell phone batteries.

The Challenge, running from October 15 to November 15, encourages students of all ages to participate and raise awareness about cell phone recycling and environmental stewardship. The school in each province and territory that collects the most cell phones, based on school population, will be awarded $500. The prize money will be used towards school environmental initiatives.

?We are very pleased to participate again this year in Waste Reduction Week as the national sponsor,? said Bernard Lord, President and CEO of the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA). ?The Recycle My Cell Student Challenge continues to be met with great enthusiasm by young Canadians from coast to coast.?

The Recycle My Cell Student Challenge has been running in conjunction with Waste Reduction Week for the last three years with much success. Last year, 470 schools registered, collecting more than 6,200 devices and accessories.

?Recycle My Cell has been an important supporter of Waste Reduction Week in Canada?, said Jo-Anne St. Godard, Chair of Waste Reduction Week in Canada. ?The Challenge really helps young Canadians to understand the importance of safely recycling e-waste and provides an excellent opportunity to participate in Waste Reduction Week.?

All schools and post-secondary institutions in each province and territory can register via http://www.wrwcanada.com. Recycle My Cell will provide the box needed to easily set up a Recycle My Cell collection site. Upon closing of the Challenge on November 15, 2012, participating schools will be able to arrange to have the phones picked up for processing for free.

The Recycle My Cell Student Challenge is made possible by the generous support of the Recycle My Cell Partners: Bell, Dell Canada Inc., Eastlink, GEEP Inc., GREENTEC, LG Electronics Canada Inc., Lynx Mobility, Mobilicity, Motorola Mobility, MTS, Nokia, Research In Motion, Rogers Communications, Samsung Electronics Canada Inc., SaskTel, Sims Recycling Solutions, Sony Mobile Communications, TBayTel, TELUS, Videotron, Virgin Mobile Canada and WIND Mobile.

About Recycle My Cell
Recycle My Cell is Canada?s national recycling program for mobile phones and accessories. The bilingual Web site - www.RecycleMyCell.ca and www.recyclemoncell.ca ? allows consumers to simply enter their postal code to locate the 10 drop-off locations closest to them where their devices will be accepted, regardless of brand or condition. The free program is run by the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA), in conjunction with cell phone carriers and handset manufacturers, who have come together to raise awareness about the importance of cell phone recycling.

About Waste Reduction Week in Canada
Waste Reduction Week (WRW) in Canada was developed in 2001 by a coalition of 13 recycling councils and sister organizations from across Canada and is delivered each October by the same group. The program?s goal is to inform Canadians about the environmental and social ramifications of wasteful practices. WRW uses its ?take action? messaging to empower all Canadians to adopt more environmentally-conscious choices. Waste Reduction Week provides Canadians with information and ideas to reduce waste in all facets of daily living, creating solutions to the many environmental challenges we face.

Local paper covers our new market business! - farm for life

Photo: Chris Kasza and Jocelyn Durston are farming on three different plots of land in Maple Ridge. Photograph by Maria Rantanen, TIMES

Chris and I were interviewed by the Maple Ridge Times recently about our Farm for Life market business and the piece was published today. Fun! Journalist Maria Rantanen wrote a story on us last year about our farming project and we were so happy to have her back on the farm to talk to her about what we've been up to since then. I've re-posted the article below and you can also read it online at www.mrtimes.com.

Couple spins magic on three small Ridge lots
A couple is joining a growing number of young adults who are growing food locally
By Maria Rantanen, The Times, September 27, 2012?

With three small plots of land, a lot of hard work and sweat, but a love of the land, one couple in Maple Ridge is supplying marketgoers with fresh produce.

Jocelyn Durston and Chris Kasza are joining a host of young adults who are getting back to the land, farming on small plots, and trying to make a living off it.

The model for their farming is called SPIN - small-lot intensive farming - and with less than acre in production and with their first full season underway, Durston and Kasza are already selling at market and to a local grocery store.

After graduating with a master's degree in urban agriculture and studying sustainability in producing food in an urban setting a few years ago, the work Durston was doing was theoretical rather than practical, working on public policy in an office setting.

But her heart was pulling her into the garden to do hands-on work.

She rented a space on the property of friends in east Maple Ridge, who had started gardening on their two-and-a-half acres.

Durston jumped into the project with her friends and started her Farm for a Year project, blogging her way through the experience.

In 2012, Farm for a Year morphed into Farm for Life, at which point her partner Kasza joined the project.

Durston said she thinks a lot of young people are starting to realize they don't want spend 40 to 50 years sitting at a job, and that they don't need to have big houses and big cars.

There is a lot of satisfaction in growing one's own food, Durston said, and pursuing what they love doing and being their own bosses.

While Durston calls herself a farmer, Kasza said he prefers the term "market gardener."

"It's a lifestyle that we really love," Durston said.

She also believes that despite the cost of land, there is a lot of under-utilized properties that could be farmed.

"There are a lot of creative ways to access land if you can't afford it," she said.

In addition to the lot they live on, Durston and Kasza have also been farming on two other lots in Maple Ridge.

The couple is selling produce from their gardens at the Haney Farmers Market every week bounty. They also sell produce to Roots on Dewdney Trunk Road.

Kasza estimated they are farming on about half to three-quarters of an acre of land.

This year, they've grown chard, several varieties of kale, cucumber, broccoli, carrots, beets, peas, and salad greens, zucchini and squash. They also have edible flowers, cut flowers, onions, and potatoes.

Whenever they go to a seed store and are faced with new possible varieties for their garden, they are like "kids in a candy shop," Durston said.

Durston and Kasza have read a lot about small-lot farming, which is known as SPIN gardening. Some of the inspiration for what they're doing came from reading about a man in Saskatoon, Wally Satzewich, who was able to make money by farming in people's backyards using city water.

He focused on high-value foods that bring in money.

"We love doing this so our goal is trying to figure out if we can do this and make a living at it," Durston said about their small-lot farming.

But they are still on a "learning curve," Kasza added.

They estimate they can make about $10,000 next year with their small-lot farming.

In addition to bringing cash from their crops, about 85 per cent of own fresh food is from their garden, which translates into huge food cost savings.

They'd also like to process the food they produce, for example, drying herbs, canning, and pickling.

Selling at the farmers market has allowed them to build relationships with their customers. One family comes to get kale from Durston and Kasza regularly - but it doesn't last them the whole week, so they come mid-week to pick up more.

Domestic stock market turns unattractive to foreign funds ...

Foreign capital inflow into Vietnam through investment funds and big securities firms has dipped remarkably while the existing funds here are approaching maturity, piling more pressure on the country?s poor-performing stock market.

At the Investors Day 2010, Andy Ho, managing director of VinaCapital, said the group intended to set up two new funds of US$200-300 million each, with one for investment in real estate and the other for investment in the stock market.

However, the plan has not fully materialized. VinaCapital has been able to mobilize capital for the property investment fund, and has found it very difficult to do so with the stock investment fund, Ho told the Daily.

It is simply because foreign investors always see whether the macro economy has regained stability and if they could gain profit, while Vietnam is not yet out of the woods. Therefore, investors will choose big markets with smoother capital circulation and more opportunities than Vietnam.

Established in 2007, Saigon Asset Management (SAM) investment fund went through the overheated growth period of Vietnam?s stock market with the VN-Index hitting 1,100 points and also witnessed this index falling below 400 points. The stocks owned by SAM back then has dropped 80-90% in value, so the fund?s performance in Vietnam is not as good as expected, said Nguyen The Lu, general director of SAM.

He said the net asset value of the investment fund had been plunging. In October, SAM will hold a shareholders meeting to decide whether to close the fund or not.

?Many investors have been mulling withdrawing from the local market but the heavy losses have made them hesitant. They expect stock prices would bounce back,? said Lu. ?Therefore, in October, many investors may vote whether or not to close the fund.?

Raising new capital is getting more difficult, said Lu. Investors will take into account the impact of the macroeconomic factors on their investments.

If investment funds generated lower profits than savings interest rates, they would not make investments. As the domestic banking system is being restructured, and concerns about a return of inflation are still there to stay, it is not easy to lure foreign investment capital.

Dinh Quang Hoan, financial consultant director of Ban Viet Securities Company, confirmed this fact, saying that not so many foreign investors want to buy shares for financial investment in Vietnam. They are waiting for economic restructuring.

Hoan noted most investors had bought stocks of local firms active in the same industry as theirs to quickly expand their operations. This is the reason why merger and acquisition (M&A) activity has grown strongly this year.

Hoan said some companies had asked his firm to provide consultancy on investment in major companies in Vietnam. Quite a few M&A deals are worth US$100 million each.

A senior source from a big securities company said he knew many investment funds that had incurred great losses in the stock market, urging them to divest capital. On the other hand, no new investors have entered Vietnam?s stock market.

He said the stock market had remained flat since the start of this year as there was a lack of policy breakthroughs.

Samsung: Galaxy S3 already updated with USSD exploit fix, reviewing situation with other phones [updated]

Android Central

Update, 7:40am EDT: Samsung tells us it's "currently in the process of conducting an internal review" into the situation with on the Galaxy S2 and other affected phones. Our own testing, and reports from readers, suggests that devices like the Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note remain vulnerable to the USSD exploit.

Original story: Yesterday we reported on a particularly nasty security vulnerability in some Samsung smartphones, which could lead to a factory reset being triggered upon visiting a website containing malicious code. Phones confirmed to be affected included the Galaxy S2, Galaxy Beam and Galaxy Ace. Our testing on various Galaxy S3 models was inconclusive, though. Some models seemed vulnerable, while others were immune.

This morning, we have official confirmation from Samsung that Galaxy S3's around the world should indeed be protected from this exploit, assuming they're running the latest software update.

"We would like to assure our customers that the recent security issue concerning the GALAXY S III has already been resolved through a software update.

We recommend all GALAXY S III customers to download the latest software update, which can be done quickly and easily via the Over-The-Air (OTA) service."

Like Samsung, we always recommend keeping your phone up-to-date with the latest firmware. So if your Galaxy S3 phone is up-to-date, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. Of course, there's nothing in that statement about Galaxy S2-class devices, which our own tests, and reports from readers, have shown are still very much at risk from this latest vulnerability. We're sure Samsung will be hurriedly preparing updates for those devices, now that this exploit method is out in the open. Nevertheless, we'll update you with any new info they provide on the Galaxy S2 or other phones.

In the meantime, if you're still concerned that your Samsung phone may be vulnerable to the USSD bug, you can check our quick, easy USSD vulnerability test to see if you're protected or not.

The Best Way to Study TOEFL

The TOEFL (Test Of English Fluency Level) test has been taken by thousands of people around the world. It is a globally accepted test that provides colleges and many others with information about a person?s English fluency level, and TOEFL scores can even be included in college applications. Therefore, a lot of people choose to study for it. I study TOEFL as well, and over the recent summer break, I was able to pull my grade up from 103 to 113. I feel that I have learned skills and tips that I can share with others. In my opinion, the best way to study for TOEFL tests is to practice understanding logical structures of passages. The following passages explain why I believe so, and how you can practice it.

Why?

Logic is very important in TOEFL. The ability to understand the logical relationships between ideas presented in passages is considered as the border that separates scores from 0 to 100 and 100 to 120. A lot of people study hard to cross that border. If you are studying for TOEFL, this means that your English is fluent to some degree. You probably do not have that much problems with vocabulary and sentencing skills. People like you will have no problems with getting perfect scores on the TOEIC and TEPS tests (some other kinds of English tests) but will need to work harder to perfect a TOEFL test. In the ?Reading and Listening sections, TOEFL wants to see if you could understand the author?s purpose of mentioning certain topics or the speaker?s intention of making a speech. In order to do this, you must be able to link the ideas using logic through the context provided. In the?Writing and Speaking sections, TOEFL wants to see if you can speak and write in decent English with your argument supported by your sub-ideas, logically. Thus, making logical relationships between ideas is the most important thing if you want to get a score above 100 points.

How?

Now, how can we study effectively for TOEFL tests?

First of all, you should memorize as many words as possible. This is so that you won?t have any problems with understanding passages and expressing your thoughts while taking the test. I would suggest memorizing as many words as you can until you run into the words you already memorized from before. If you are a Korean, the books ?Hackers Vocabulary? by David Cho and ??? ?? Vocabulary? by Tomato are highly recommended. Memorize them all!

Practice is the next key.

With the Listening and Reading section, you should practice to see the logical structure of passages: ?Why is the author saying this??, ?Why did the student call his friend?? and so on. You should keep on solving problems until you get used to the question types and time limits as well. Practice, practice, and practice.

With the Speaking and Writing section, you should practice giving responses that are logically structured. For example, if you want to talk about why you like apples, your explanations shouldn?t say because you don?t like bananas. With the Speaking section, you just have to practice speaking. Watch American or British TV series to improve your English accent. The ?TOEFL test encourages you to speak in either one of those two accents as they are two of the most used English in the world.

To sum up, the best way to study for TOEFL tests is to practice understanding logical structures of passages. However, the most important thing is having the passion for studying for the TOEFL test and?investing?in one?s future.

Judge exonerates former LA gang member of murder

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A courtroom erupted in applause, cheers and shouts of "We love you" as a former gang member imprisoned for 19 years for a murder he didn't commit was exonerated and set free Monday.

John Edward Smith, who was still in jail clothing when he appeared in court, smiled broadly, acknowledging his excited family and friends.

Adding to the Hollywood-style courtroom drama, those applauding for Smith included pop star Chris Brown, who was in the same courtroom for his probation hearing involving the 2009 beating of his then-girlfriend Rihanna.

Outside court, Smith's lawyer Deirdre O'Connor said Brown shook her hand and congratulated her.

"Thank you for your enthusiasm," Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg told the crowd as she vacated Smith's convictions for murder and attempted murder in a gang-related drive-by shooting. Prosecutors told her they were convinced that the lone eyewitness to the 1993 incident had lied at Smith's trial, naming him as the shooter. Smith always maintained he was at his grandmother's house when the shooting occurred several blocks away.

"Thank you for the opportunity to do justice," the judge told lawyers for both sides after she announced her ruling.

Smith, wearing glasses and a tan striped polo shirt, was released from a Los Angeles County jail at about 8:30 p.m. He was greeted by a host of TV cameras.

"I had good days and bad days, I stayed hopeful and that's all I could do," he told the media gathered outside the downtown jail. "I'm not bitter at all, because that ain't going to get me nowhere. I've got to move on."

He said he was looking forward to "going home and seeing my grandmother," who raised him. Family members drove him to her house, which she had mortgaged to pay for his initial defense, O'Connor said.

The grandmother, 79-year-old Laura Neal, used a walker to attend the hearing earlier in the day, and wept when Schnegg announced her decision.

"I always knew he didn't do it," Neal told reporters after court. "I'm happy and sad. But the part of me that was in there with him ? I'm free now too."

She said it was difficult to wait through the weekend after Smith's hearing was delayed Friday.

"It was hell," Neal said. "Friday was a big disappointment."

Smith's lawyer, O'Connor, explained, "The closer you get to freedom, the harder it is to wait another day."

The 37-year-old Smith was 18 when he went to prison. He maintained he was at his grandmother's house with family when the shooting took place Sept. 9, 1993, in a gang-infested area.

He said he knew nothing about the crime until his mother called to tell him about it.

The only eyewitness ? a victim who was shot and survived ? said police pressured him to identify Smith as the shooter.

Prosecutors told the judge they now believe he lied, and Schnegg found the conviction was based on perjured testimony.

Smith's exoneration was pursued by Innocence Matters, a public interest law firm in Torrance.

The eyewitness, Landu Mvuemba, met with Innocence Matters representatives in 2010 and immediately blurted out that he had lied at the trial, said O'Connor, who heads the group.

"Within the first two minutes of the interview, Mvuemba recanted," O'Connor said. Mvuemba was 16 at the time of the shooting.

He told representatives of Innocence Matters, "The police told me they knew who did it," a defense motion stated.

O'Connor said Smith wept when she called him with the news about Mvuemba. "He said, 'Why did he do it? Why did he lie?'" O'Connor recalled.

Mvuemba said police pointed to Smith, whom he had known in elementary school, and told him other witnesses had identified Smith as the shooter. Mvuemba said he also was shown a photo of his friend DeAnthony Williams, who died in the shooting.

"I felt a lot of pressure to go along with it," Mvuemba said.

The two victims had been on the street examining the scene of another shooting the night before when a car pulled up and someone opened fire.

Mvuemba said he tried three times to tell authorities that he didn't see enough to testify, but his pleas were ignored.

"Mvuemba knew it was wrong to identify Mr. Smith as the man who shot him," according to the defense motion. "But when he saw his deceased friend's crying mother in the courtroom, he felt as if he had no other choice."

Mvuemba is currently imprisoned on a rape conviction.

Judge Schnegg said she held many meetings with the defense and prosecution in the year since the recanting was disclosed.

She told Smith in court: "You had a very committed attorney, and you had a prosecution team that did the right thing."

Schnegg also said lacked sufficient information to declare Smith factually innocent, but she vacated his convictions for murder and attempted murder, and ordered him released.

O'Connor said Smith's trial was undermined by ineffective assistance of attorneys who failed to investigate the case properly at trial and on appeal. She said lawyers and police often take "shortcuts" in gang cases.

"Mr. Smith was not the shooter," the motion said. "He was not at the scene of the crime."

Smith's sister, Tiana Goodman, 25, said he would be meeting nieces and nephews who were born while he was in prison.

"This is a big day for our family," she said, tears running down her cheeks. "He kept his faith and never gave up."

Data Centers Waste a Ridiculously Massive Amount of Energy [Data Centers]

Data Centers Waste a Ridiculously Massive Amount of Energy There is a lot of data out there, and more is being created every day. It takes a lot of resources to keep it around, and make sure that you and everyone else can access what they want, when they want, with minimal downtime. Naturally this takes a lot of energy, but the New York Times looked into exactly how much. It's a ridiculous amount.

From the Times:

Most data centers, by design, consume vast amounts of energy in an incongruously wasteful manner, interviews and documents show. Online companies typically run their facilities at maximum capacity around the clock, whatever the demand. As a result, data centers can waste 90 percent or more of the electricity they pull off the grid, The Times found.

Wasting 90 percent of anything is already incredibly inefficient, but it only gets worse when you consider how much electricity these data centers are actually pulling off the grid. In many cases, it's more than a medium-sized town. That's per data center, and we have quite a few of those.

There are ways to make it better, but there are also obstacles to implementing them. For one, data centers are notoriously secretive; not only are their locations often secret, but their hardware can be proprietary and hush-hush too. On top of that, when uptime is priority number one, taking risks on anything new is counter-intuitive. Sure, maybe this new thing could increase energy efficiency, but it also might break.

As the world generates more and more data, and that data continues to migrate to the cloud, data center efficiency is going to become a bigger and bigger problem. You can read more about the harrowing details over at the New York Times. [The New York Times]

Katie Couric opens up about battling bulimia

NEW YORK (AP) ? Viewers of Katie Couric's talk show were doubtless surprised on Monday when, during the discussion of eating disorders, Couric disclosed that she had had her own struggles with that cruel, sometimes deadly condition.

"I wrestled with bulimia all through college and for two years after that," she said, describing the guilt she felt at eating a single cookie or chewing a stick of gum that wasn't sugar-free.

But the bulk of the show was devoted to her guests, who included experts on the subject as well as its sufferers, notably singer and new "X Factor" judge Demi Lovato.

During the hour, Couric said little more about her experience, which she had never before made public.

"I kind of hesitated to even bring it up," she told The Associated Press after the taping. "But I felt that if I expect people on my show to be honest, then, when relevant, I owe it to people watching to be honest myself.

"I wanted to focus on my guests," she said, "while acknowledging one of the reasons this issue is so important to me: I went through it."

It's all part of a balance Couric is striving for on her new syndicated daytime show, "Katie," between sharing her experiences and turning her show into a personal confessional.

But in an exclusive interview with the AP, Couric, 55, shared details about the illness that first plagued her as a senior at Yorktown High School in Arlington, Va.

It began, she said, when she learned she had been turned down by the college she most wanted to attend.

Couric was a likely candidate for an eating disorder.

"Like a lot of young women, I was struggling with my body image," she said, "and feeling like I wasn't good enough or attractive enough or thin enough."

She termed her figure at the time as "curvy," and not the cultural ideal, which she identified as "five-foot-eight and weighing 115 pounds. It can be so difficult to embrace the body that you have if it doesn't fit with the ideal. Women get praised for being super-thin, so you keep striving to be that way."

She said her disorder "ebbed and flowed" through the years.

"Some periods were worse than others, when I was binging and purging a lot," she said. "I'd have a piece of gum that wasn't sugarless and then say, 'Oh! I've been bad,' and then feel so terrible that I would eat and throw up. It was awful.

"But what I'm describing is something so many people have gone through or are going through," she noted, "and it's so damaging, both psychically and physically."

Couric attended the University of Virginia, then landed her first job at the ABC News bureau in Washington, D.C. And even then, she was waging a battle with food.

With the help of a therapist, she had a grip on her condition by her early 20s, though "it didn't mean that I didn't still have issues and feel bad about myself."

But since then, she said, "I've learned how to have a much healthier relationship with food, and how to enjoy my life without obsessing about food."

She said she was glad she had shared with viewers her ordeal with bulimia, "because it's so commonplace."

And it's not the first time Couric has let the public in on a personal ordeal. Her audience shared her pain from the death of her husband, Jay Monahan, of colon cancer in 1998. The tragedy led Couric, then a co-anchor of "Today," to become an advocate for colon cancer awareness and for colonoscopies. In 2000, she underwent a colonoscopy on the air.

"The educational aspect far outweighed any personal embarrassment I might have felt," she explained. "I had just lost my husband at 42 to this No. 2 cancer killer of men and women. I had a bully pulpit from which I could implore people to take steps that could potentially save their lives. It was a no-brainer."

In the future, viewers of "Katie" can expect her to confide in them again when it feels right.

"I don't think there are any huge revelations about myself that need to be shared or would be appropriate to share," she said. "But I'm trying to strike the right balance of talking about my situation, but not focusing on it so much that I'm being put on the couch."

Morning letters: Quandaries for a Nobel Prize president

Libyan followers of the Ansar al-Shariah Brigades chant anti-U.S. slogans during a protest in front of the Tibesti Hotel, in Benghazi, Libya, Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, as part of widespread anger across the Muslim world about a film ridiculing Islam?s Prophet Muhammad. One of the leading suspects in an attack that killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans is the Libyan-based Islamic militant group Ansar al-Shariah, led by former Guantanamo detainee Sufyan bin Qumu. The group denied responsibility in a video Friday but did acknowledge its fighters were in the area during what it called a ???popular protest??? at the consulate, according to Ben Venzke of the IntelCenter, a private analysis firm that monitors Jihadist media for the U.S. intelligence community. (AP Photo/Mohammad Hannon)

NEWPORT BEACH, Ron Williams:?In 2009 President Barack Obama took a trip to Egypt to address the Islamic world. He invited the Muslim Brotherhood to his presentation, thus giving tacit approval to a terrorist organization that had been outlawed since the assassination of Anwar Sadat in 1981. The Muslim Brotherhood was founded in Egypt in 1928 with the express purpose of implementing Shariah law worldwide and to re-establish the Global Islamic State.

The ?Arab Spring,? as our president referred to the overthrow of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, was nothing more than the Muslim Brotherhood at work to gain power. After Mubarak was deposed, Yusuf al-Qaradawi, a leader in the Muslim Brotherhood movement, came out of exile in Damascus, Syria, and made an address in Cairo?s Tahir Square, which by some estimates 1 million Egyptians attended, who were protected by the Egyptian military. Recently, Egyptians took to the streets and attempted to overrun our Embassy in Cairo.

The Islamic Middle East is in flames, and this president does not have an answer on how to put the genie back in the bottle, after he popped the cork. His weak appeal to the Islamic world has only inspired the Muslim Brotherhood to openly challenge the U.S. and appeal to Muslims across the Islamic world to unite in a common cause to assert their will to achieve their goal of a Caliphate. It was not a film about Muhammad that spurred this uprising. It was orchestrated by the religious fanaticism of the Muslim Brotherhood.

The lessons of history should have taught President Obama that appeasement in the face of tyranny encourages those who want to exert their evil intentions to challenge those who lack the will to stand for liberty and for U.S. exceptionalism.

If everyone thinks the economy is our primary concern and threat to our lives, wait until Egypt, Yemen, Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Lebanon and Syria align with the Muslim Brotherhood?s goals.

Love vs. hate

TUSTIN, Dan Van Dorpe:?Throughout Muslim countries in the Mideast, thousands have burned American flags, destroyed American property and attacked American personnel. Also, dozens of Coptic Christians in Muslim countries have been killed and their churches burned to the ground in Allah?s name.

Yet, not one Middle East embassy or mosque in America, a predominantly Christian country, has been attacked as a result of the recent Middle Eastern actions against America and against Christians.

It appears that the Islamist message is to kill infidels while the message of Christians is to love your enemy and turn the other cheek.

Caricatures of faith

ANAHEIM, Mohammed Shoaib:?Religion is a function of faith. Critique of any religion, therefore, must remain confined within the faith. Muslims do not caricature other religions.

Why should others do it to Muslims?

Lacking leadership

MISSION VIEJO, Pam McKeen:?In 2009 President Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Nobel committee was influenced by a speech the president gave, reaching out to the Muslim world and to his efforts to prevent nuclear proliferation. How?s that working out?

We can?t blame him completely for this Middle East mess, anymore than we can blame former President George W. Bush for 9/11. But, we can blame Obama if he doesn?t show strong leadership and stop the mealy-mouth ?our hearts are broken? rhetoric while he continues campaigning.

No one wants another war but we do want respect, and if we have to come down hard in order to get it then so be it.

Illusionary control

YORBA LINDA, Roy Burtrum:?Now that Obama has shown us that he does not have full control of the Mideast, as he promised if he were elected, I assume that he will now blame George W. Bush for Mideast problems.

His decision to entertain the Muslim Brotherhood twice at the White House, and recently refusing Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu?s request for a meeting to discuss the current Mideast situation, is unexplainable. However, when one considers that he did attend Muslim schools when young, perhaps his decision is understandable.

It is amazing that half of the U.S. population is willing to give Obama a second term in office.

Swift justice, again?

LOS ALAMITOS, Robert Zato:?At Andrews Joint Base the president addressed the nation about the people killed in the Libya consulate. He said that we will bring the perpetrators to justice.

I?m sure that U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has already sent out e-mails reminding everyone to read the perpetrators their Miranda rights immediately after they are captured. Then he can start planning their trials in New York City.

Attempted attack on Israeli border highlights militant presence in Sinai

One soldier from the Israel Defense Forces was killed and another wounded in an attack on the Sinai border today, while three militants were killed.

Israel said it disrupted an attempted large-scale terrorist attack on its southern border today, underscoring the ongoing threat posed by militants in the Sinai peninsula, who have stepped up their attacks since Egypt's popular uprising last year.

Israel's military said it killed three militants who crossed into Israel midday near Har Harif with weapons and explosive belts. One soldier from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) was killed and another wounded in the exchange of fire. The last time an Israeli soldier was killed by militants from the Sinai was August 2011, according to the IDF.

Israel has long been concerned about security in the Sinai peninsula, which it captured in the 1967 Six-Day War but ceded after making peace with Egypt in 1978.

Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's regime responded harshly to terrorist attacks in the peninsula, particularly after a 2004 attack that killed 34 in the tourist city of Taba, as The Christian Science Monitor's Dan Murphy pointed out recently. But with Mr. Mubarak's ouster last year and the formation of a new government dominated by the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood, Israel has voiced concern that Egyptian security in the Sinai has taken a backseat.?

The deterioration in security has been bad for both sides, however. In August, 16 Egyptian border guards and soldiers were killed, which prompted Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi to?summarily dismiss Defense Minister Mohamed Hussein Tantawi and other top military leaders.

Israel has been building an extensive fence along the Sinai border, which is nearing completion. The Israeli soldiers attacked today were guarding a section of this fence. It's not the first time it has been attacked; in June, two militants attacked IDF contractors involved in building the fence, eliciting a strong statement from Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak that the new Egyptian president must "swiftly" put an end to attacks from the Sinai.

While many have speculated that the Egypt-Israel peace deal could falter under Islamist rule in Cairo, the Sinai poses a challenge for both nations. If they don't find a way to work together, they both may suffer.

Your Moral Compass Is Reversible

I did not claim that he was wrong - in fact, every word he said was correct - but you are dead wrong. You don't need to be deluded to be happy, and "pessimist" and "cynic" are not substitutes for "realist".

There are many very dark aspects to the human condition. Many people suffer every day, and many of them will spend the entire rest of their lives suffering. People who deserve power will never hold it, and many of the power-hungry have much more power than they deserve.

My sadness about these things will do nothing to improve them, so why should I be sad? I'm not deluded, but I'm usually a rather happy person. The human condition is complicated and twisted, and has many good sides as well as bad sides. You're daft if you think you're doing something for humanity or yourself by focusing on the bad sides. You really can just accept them without dwelling on them.

And stop this "realist" elitism. You talk like you're better than the hordes of "deluded" people. Like you've achieved enlightenment and are now miles ahead of the rest of humanity in terms of intelligence. I used to think like that and it was not good for anyone. Trust me, we all see the problems in the world just like you do.
