Off Track Planet: The 10 Coolest Subways Around the World (PHOTOS)

The progressive subway architecture of Munich's underground wonderland pushes the envelope. The U-bahn is made up of mod, technicolor stations with little evidence of human finagling (i.e. no pissed-on benches, trash or graffiti). While several stations are old as funk (as far back as the 1930s), most have been newly renovated to resemble kaleidoscope-like wonders. We like the Sankt-Quirin-Platz station best for its quirky mix of old and new.

Health and Fitness Articles ? Blog Archive ? Eye Exercises to ...

Eye is extensively referred as mirrors of soul. Eye is definitely an crucial a part of human entire body as it assists the physique to accomplish its tasks to perfection. Eye is the part of the body that aids us acknowledge light. What we see making use of the eye is transmitted from the eye towards the brain which interprets it and reacts to things we see. Taking care with the Eye is of prime importance, it really is commonly explained that in case your vision is fine you?ve got never ever felt more healthy than that. Similar to how we exercising to possess a healthful and match physique we also ought to do Eye exercising to a more healthy vision for longer years.

Many eye workouts

Eye workout mainly entails strengthening of eye muscle tissues which helps in improving your vision. The five basic eye exercising strategy which can be performed without having any help are
Blinking ? Blinking is something that we do on a daily basis but accomplishing it incredibly usually inside a proper way improves our vision and ones eye get hold of skills. When we blink, the eye goes into darkness, discharges the past data/images and gets refreshed for new photos. This can be quite helpful exercise for experts who get the job done for prolonged hours in front in the laptop. This training decreases eye strain drastically.

Palming ? This physical exercise relieves the tension around the eyes. Just rest your palm on the eyes for handful of minutes without the need of applying any strain towards the eye. This exercising is basic and can certainly make a difference for your tiring eyes.

Number Eight ? This exercise improves the flexibility of eye muscles. Imagine number eight placed at a distance in front of you. Turn it to one side and trace the figure eight with your eyes.
Near & Distant Focusing ? this is the best exercise to strengthen the eye muscles. Place any object in short distance (say 10inches) from you and focus on it. Then focus your eye on object which is at distance of 10-20 feet from you. Keep repeating this for about 3-5minutes and your sure to improve your vision.

Zoom ? the training improves focusing abilities of your eye. Stretch your arm towards the full length in front of you and focus around the thumb. Bring the thumb closer to you and then again move it back to its original position. Remember to continue your focus around the thumb as you move it back and front.

Why not to use glasses to Improve Vision.

Eye workout routines are a must for everyone and there is no substitute for this to possess a perfect vision. Many people think that wearing glasses or lenses improves your vision. That?s not the case; working with glasses and lenses may help you see objects clearly but is by no means a permanent solution to the problem on our eye. When you wear lens or glasses, it really is the lens that sees and focuses on the object in front and not your eye. Because of the fact you are restricting your eye muscles movement, the muscle tissues get weaker (medically known as atrophy) and you end up worsening your eyes with the use of lens and glasses.

Eye workout routines are advised 3 to 4 times inside a week, and should not be performed on consecutive days. Pregnant and breast feeding women are recommended to consult their doctor before starting the eye workout routines. It really is indeed necessary to make eye exercising part of our weekly routine and you?re guaranteed to possess an improved viewing

Sisters work to raise money to fight lymphoma - Kane County ...

ST. CHARLES ? Eleven years ago, Susan Moody of Batavia was a single mother of two, running four miles a day and working in Chicago.

But one day in October 2001, she suddenly felt like she could not breathe.

?I felt like I?m having an anxiety attack,? Moody, 53, recalled of that strange fall morning. ?I woke up, and I can?t breathe. I took my son to a friend?s house and my daughter to daycare. I walked to the emergency room. A scan showed a huge tumor in my chest, a non-Hodgkin?s lymphoma the size of a small cantaloupe pressing against my heart and lungs.?

Both Hodgkin?s and non-Hodgkin?s lymphoma are named for a group of blood cancers that develop in the lymphatic or immune system, named for the type of cell they affect. It was a bad case of deja vu for Moody ? her father, Bruce May, had just died that February of non-Hodgkin?s lymphoma.

?He was an old, stubborn German,? Moody said. ?Seriously, he could drop and give you 70 push-ups on his hospital room floor. We could not imagine he could die. He worked his whole life, retired, got sick and died within three years.?

Moody survived her cancer with a stem cell transplant. And then Wendy Peniak, 51, of Geneva, Moody?s younger sister, was diagnosed in January 2010 with non-Hodgkin?s lymphoma. She has not yet needed treatment.

The family, including a third sister, Sandy Beach, 47, of Batavia, will host a fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society from 6-9 p.m. Monday at McNally?s Traditional Irish Pub, 109 E. Main St., St. Charles, with the hope of raising more than $2,000 toward research to find a cure.

The event includes live music and raffle prizes. The three sisters and Lisa Dent of the US 99.5-FM morning radio show will be pouring drinks as guest bartenders. And while they are raising glasses and money, they also will think of their father, who died Feb. 5 ? 11 years ago.

?My hope is that this fundraiser will raise awareness about lymphoma,? Beach said. ?And that people will be encouraged to donate to help researchers find a cure ? not only at the fundraiser, but also the rest of the year as well.?

? ? ?

Moody and Peniak are now part of a national study of blood cancers through the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. The study seeks to find genetic connections in blood cancers.

?Wendy and I are in the Dana Farber study ... in a way, to honor our father, Bruce May,? Moody said. ?During his fight with lymphoma, [he] entered every study and trial available to him, even when he knew his time was short, in his own prayerful hope that it could eventually help others. Little did he know that within one year after his death, one of the trial drug studies he was involved with would help save me.?

Alexander R. Vartanov, the research assistant for the Harvard Study of Genetic Factors that Lead to Lymphoma, said 700 individuals comprising 300 families are enrolled in the study.

?It started in 2004 with the aim of identifying specific genes in families that have multiple cases of lymphoma in first-degree relatives such as siblings, parents and children,? Vartnov said. ?We are finding that there are correlations in certain families. Breast cancer is well-known for its identifying gene. With lymphoma, there is more mystery to it, in that it?s not well-known how many genes are prevalent.?

Part of the research is to identify as many of these genes as possible, then subsequently identify treatments that could target those genes, he said. A test for the lymphoma gene is at least five to 10 years away. Even a test for lymphoma before the onset of symptoms is years away as well, Vartnov said.

?As part of the study, we have encouraged unaffected siblings and other first-degree relatives to participate,? Vartnov said. ?And that way, the aim is to paint a complete picture of the family.?

The study continues to enroll participants, he said. Anyone interested in participating or who wants to donate to the research can contact Vartnov at alexanderr_vartanov@dfci.harvard.edu. Or they can contact lead investigator Dr. Jennifer Brown at jennifer_brown@dfci.harvard.edu.

Moody said after the fundraiser, she will talk to her six unaffected siblings about participating in the gene study.

? ? ?

Peniak is hopeful the study will make things easier for lymphoma patients in the future, both a means for early diagnosis and an effective treatment.

?It was quite accidental how it was found,? Peniak said of her cancer. ?I was having a pain in my lower right abdomen, and so they did a CT scan and it showed enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes. The doctors knew the family history and thought it was prudent to have a biopsy done.?

Doctors took out a slice of the lymph node, froze it, stained it and sent it to Mayo Clinic for diagnosis, which came back as non-Hodkin?s follicular lymphoma, a slower-growing type of blood cancer than her sister?s or father?s, but still a lymphoma.

?It?s not doing anything right now, but I know at some point treatment will be needed, usually chemotherapy,? Peniak said. ?We need a good way to test before symptoms. There is no indicator other than really bad pain.?

There are 28 hours, 19 minutes remaining to comment on this story.

FDA approves Roche skin cancer drug Erivedge ? Bangor Daily ...

NEW YORK ? Federal regulators on Monday approved a pill that treats the most common type of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma.

The pill is called Erivedge and is made by Genentech, a unit of Swiss drug maker Roche. Erivedge is intended to treat locally advanced cancer for patients who are not candidates for surgery or radiation, and for patients whose cancer has spread to other parts of the body. The capsule is taken once per day.

Genentech said Erivedge is the first drug approved to treat advanced basal cell carcinoma. It said the drug will be available within one to two weeks.

The drug?s label will warn that it is linked to fetal death and severe birth defects when it is used by pregnant women. The most common side effects of Erivedge include muscle spasms, hair loss, weight loss, diarrhea, fatigue, changes or loss in sense of taste, decreased appetite, constipation and vomiting.

Curis Inc. of Lexington, Mass., which collaborated with Genentech on the drug, is getting a $10 million payment from Genentech now that the drug has been approved.

The approval comes ahead of schedule, as the Food and Drug Administration previously said it would make a decision on Erivedge by March 8. The drug was given a fast six-month review because there are no approved treatments for basal cell carcinoma.

(AP Photo/Steve Ruark, File)

(AP) ? Federal investigators have concluded that Air Force officials at the military mortuary in Dover, Del., illegally punished four civilian workers for blowing the whistle on the mishandling of body parts of dead troops.

The Office of Special Counsel said in a report released Tuesday that they have recommended to the Air Force that it discipline the three officials who allegedly retaliated against the whistle-blowers. The three were not identified by name. It said one is an active-duty military member and the other two are civilians.

Air Force Secretary Michael Donley said in a statement that he has appointed a two-star general to review the findings and take "appropriate action." Donley said reprisals against whistle-blowers are unacceptable.

Donley said he and the Air Force's top officer, Gen. Norton Schwartz, "believe strongly there is no place for reprisal in the Air Force. Reprisals against employees are unethical and illegal and counter to Air Force core values."

In an earlier investigation report released last November, the Office of Special Counsel said it had found "gross mismanagement" at the Dover facility, where small body parts of U.S. troops killed in Afghanistan were lost on two occasions. The Air Force said at the time that it took disciplinary action ? but did not fire ? three senior supervisors there for their role in the mismanagement. The reprisal accusations were a separate matter and were investigated by the Special Counsel under the Whistleblower Protection Act.

The three disciplined in connection with the earlier Special Counsel included Air Force Col. Robert Edmondson, who commanded the Dover mortuary at the time of the incidents, and two civilian supervisors ? Trevor Dean and Quinton Keel.

Edmondson was given a letter of reprimand, denied a job commanding a unit at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., and barred from future command assignments. Dean and Keel took a cut in pay and were moved to nonsupervisory jobs at Dover. All three have declined to comment publicly on the matter.

Although the names of the three accused of retaliating against the whistle-blowers were not made public, two officials said they are Edmondson, Dean and Keel. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of privacy restrictions.

The Air Force did not immediately respond to a request to seek comment from the three accused men.

Rep. Rush Holt, D-N.J., who wrote to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta last September inquiring about alleged problems at Dover, before the loss of body parts was made public, said Tuesday that Donley should fire those who retaliated against the whistle-blowers ? "if he hasn't already."

Panetta expressed deep disappointment in the Dover revelations last November, and he ordered Donley to report back to him on whether stronger disciplinary actions were warranted. Donley said Tuesday that he is still working on that assessment.

Panetta also appointed a retired Army general, John Abizaid, to lead an independent assessment of actions taken to improve mortuary operations at Dover. Navy Capt. John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesman, said Panetta has discussed the matter with Abizaid twice and expects him to report his group's findings by the end of February.

The four whistle-blowers had alleged that they suffered retaliation for their disclosures, including job termination, indefinite administrative leave and five-day suspensions.

James Parsons, one of the whistle-blowers, said Tuesday that he had not seen the investigators' report but was told Monday that its conclusions support his and the others' claims of retaliation.

Parsons is an embalming/autopsy technician. Two of the other whistle-blowers are Mary Ellen Spera, a mortuary inspector, and William Zwicharowski, a senior mortuary inspector. Those three told The Associated Press last November, after the scandal broke, that the Air Force had retaliated against them. Parsons said he was fired in 2010 but reinstated almost immediately. Spera and Zwicharowski said they received letters of reprimand.

Zwicharowski also said he was put on administrative leave for eight months and at one point was labeled "mentally unstable."

Spera and Zwicharowski both said in interviews Tuesday that they had not seen the Special Counsel report.

No Child Left Behind Waivers: States Failed To Hold Schools Accountable For Student Performance

MIAMI -- In its initial review of No Child Left Behind waiver requests, the U.S. Education Department highlighted a similar weakness in nearly every application: States did not do enough to ensure schools would be held accountable for the performance of all students.

The Obama administration praised the states for their high academic standards. But nearly every application was criticized for being loose about setting high goals and, when necessary, interventions for all student groups ? including minorities, the disabled and low-income ? or for failing to create sufficient incentives to close the achievement gap.

Under No Child Left Behind, schools where even one group of students falls behind are considered out of compliance and subject to interventions. The law has been championed for helping shed light on education inequalities, but most now agree it is due for change.

Indiana's proposal to opt out of the federal law's strictest requirements was criticized by the Education Department for its "inattention" to certain groups, like students still learning the English language. New Mexico's plan, a panel of peer reviewers noted, did not include accountability and interventions for student subgroups based on factors like achievement and graduation rates. In Florida, the department expressed concern that the performance of some groups of students could go overlooked.

The concerns were outlined in letters sent last December by the administration to the 11 states that have applied for a waiver. Since then, state and federal officials have been talking about how to address the concerns; some states have already agreed to changes.

The letters were obtained by The Associated Press for all of the states except Tennessee and Kentucky, which declined to provide them until an announcement is made on whether a waiver is granted. The Education Department has previously said it expected to notify states by mid-January.

"Our priority is protecting children and maintaining a high bar even as we give states more flexibility to get more resources to the children most in need, even if that means the process takes a little longer than we anticipated," said Daren Briscoe, a department spokesman.

Jack Jennings, president of the Center on Education Policy, said federal officials are in a challenging spot.

"The current law means that each group of kids, whether they are children with a disability, or African-American, or poor kids, have attention paid to them, because the schools are accountable for each and every group," said Jennings. "But what the states are asking is that they all be lumped together."

The Bush-era law is aimed at making sure 100 percent of students reach proficiency in math and reading by 2014, a goal states are far from achieving. As that year draws closer, more and more schools are expected to fall out of compliance, subjecting them to penalties that range from after-school tutoring to closure.

While there is bipartisan agreement the 2002 law needs to be fixed, Congress has not passed a comprehensive reform. President Barack Obama announced in September that states could apply for waivers and scrap the proficiency requirement if they met conditions designed to better prepare and test students.

The 11 states that applied for the first round of waivers were Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico and Tennessee. Many more states are expected to request waivers in the second round ? meaning all eyes will be on the first approvals.

The Center on Education Policy analyzed all the waiver requests and found that in nine of the 11 states, almost all decisions on penalties and interventions would be based on the performance of two groups: all students and a "disadvantaged" group that would replace the current system of separate categories of students according to race, ethnicity, income, disability and English language proficiency.

Those separate categories are at the heart of what No Child Left Behind aimed to correct ? vast achievement gaps between white, black and Hispanic students, between the affluent and low-income ? and what most agree is the problem with the law: If any one of these groups of students does not meet the state's annual benchmarks for proficiency in reading and math, the school is labeled as "failing."

In a letter sent Jan. 17, Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, and Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., urged Education Secretary Arne Duncan to require strong accountability measures and ensure civil rights and educational equity gains under No Child Left Behind are not lost.

"We fear that putting students with disabilities, English language learners and minority students into one `super subgroup' will mask the individual needs of these distinct student subgroups," they said.

In the feedback provided to states by a panel of peer reviewers in December, many states were praised for plans to institute college and career-ready standards and develop teacher evaluation systems that take into account student growth ? two hallmarks of the Obama administration's education policy. The panel's concerns varied, but meeting the needs of all groups of students was one consistent theme.

In New Mexico, for example, the U.S. Education Department expressed concern about a lack of incentives to close achievement gaps and hold schools accountable for the performance of all students. In a follow-up letter sent late in January, subgroup accountability was still an area of concern.

Hanna Skandera, secretary designate for the New Mexico Public Education Department, said the state's original plan did include breaking down data on student performance by subgroup on each school's report card. But after conversations with the U.S. Education Department, schools will be adding information on whether they are on track for progress and growth in meeting annual targets. If a group falls behind, schools will be subject to intervention measures.

"We had high level reporting," Skandera said. "Now we're going to provide another layer so everything is crystal clear to parents across the state."

Minnesota's initial feedback included concern about "the lack of incentives to improve achievement for all groups of students and narrow achievement gap between subgroups." Sam Kramer, federal education policy specialist for the Minnesota Department of Education, said most of that criticism was focused on the state's graduation rate. In its initial submission, the state did not take into account the graduation rate of different subgroups in its annual targets.

After receiving the letter, the state switched to a system that will take into account how subgroups of students did in meeting those graduation targets.

Kramer said he thinks Minnesota will be better able to meet the needs of disadvantaged groups of students under the new system.

"No Child Left Behind was very good at diagnosing the problem," Kramer said. "It was very good at shining a light on the differences between subgroups."

It was less effective, he said, at offering successful ways to help improve.

"We are going to be able to go in and be flexible and reactive to the specific needs of those subgroups," Kramer said.

Pedro Noguera, an education professor at New York University, said the struggle by school districts to lift the performance of different groups of students is a signal of a deeper problem that won't be solved by waivers.

"We need to make sure the districts and schools feel some pressure to make sure that all the students they are responsible for are being educated," he said. "However, they need to focus on different kinds of evidence, and not merely performance on a standardized test. That's where they don't get it."
