Rhino Poaching Hits New Record High in South Africa

BBM Explorer/CC BY 2.0

In terms of poaching, elephants had an awful year in 2011, and now we learn that the same thing can be said for rhinos.

Reuters reports that rhino poaching in South Africa increased 33% in 2011, with 443 rhinos killed and half of that poaching occurring in Kruger National Park:

The street value of rhinoceros horn has soared to about $65,000 a kilogram...as a belief?with no basis in science?has taken hold in recent years in parts of Asia that ingesting it can cure or prevent cancer.

South Africa, home to 90% of the African rhino population at about 20,000 individuals, was losing about 15 animals a year a decade ago. But poaching increased dramatically from about 2007 as a growing affluent class in places such as Vietnam and Thailand began spending more on rhino horn for traditional medicine.

I quote those two paragraphs because to the casual follower of the plight of the rhino due to poaching, and the causes of that poaching, it ands a wrinkle to the story as commonly told.

1) Though rhino horn has been removed from the official pharmacopeia of Traditional Chinese Medicine (where it had previously been prescribed for a variety of ailments, though not impotency as sometimes believed), the erroneous belief that rhino horn has anti-cancer properties is part of the reason for the rise in rhino horn prices and therefore poaching; and 2) It's not just Chinese demand, but also Vietnamese and Thai use of rhino horn. Which is all to say, contrary to the verbal finger pointing that I sometimes hear about China this and China that in regards to rhino horn or whatever endangered species (often with a very very thinly veiled bit of xenophobia underneath it all), it's a bigger issue than that, though does not let China off the hook either.

Would you donate to pay down national debt? Some do

Date: Saturday Dec. 24, 2011 10:00 PM ET

If you had an extra few thousand dollars lying around the house, what would you do with it? Buy a big-screen TV? Head south for a winter vacation?

How about donating it to the federal government to help pay down that half-trillion-dollar national debt?

No?

Well, you may be surprised to learn that some Canadians do make donations like that. In fact, such gifts in the last year have set a record and that surprises even the receiver general of Canada.

"It shocked me to find out in the last year it was a little over $11 million dollars," says Rona Ambrose, who is also minister of public works and government services. "That's a lot of money."

Has she ever donated some of her own money? "No, I have not," she replies with a smile. "But I actually write letters to people who do send in cheques."

The $11.2 million donated over the last year is twice the amount from the previous year.

"The majority of it is in wills," Ambrose says. "People will leave money to the government to help pay off the debt."

But Toronto estate lawyer Ian Hull suspects not all of those donations were willing.

"It would fall into the hands of the government if you had no family and no will," he points out.

Still, it might be easier to give money to the government after you're gone. For the living who are willing to donate, there are strict rules about gifts to the federal government.

"It has to go to a specific department," says Cleo Hamel, a senior tax analyst with H&R Block in Calgary. "It also has to have a letter accompanied with it saying you specifically want to have this money go to the national debt."

If you're thinking of donating and you're not put off by jumping through bureaucratic hoops, maybe some cold, hard facts will stop you in your tracks.

Since Canada's debt costs about $3.7 million an hour to maintain (according to the Canadian Taxpayers Federation), the $22 million in cash and property that Canadians have donated over the past decade was enough to keep the national debt in check for almost six hours.

So, how about that trip south?

London 2012: Celtic trio sounded out over Team GB selection

James Forrest Celtic

James Forrest is one of three Celtic players to have been contacted by the Team GB manager Stuart Pearce. Photograph: David Cheskin/PA

The latest indication of Stuart Pearce's plans for his Great Britain football team at the Olympics has emanated from Scotland, where three Celtic players have received letters asking if they would be willing to form part of Team GB.

Scott Brown, James Forrest and Adam Matthews have been targeted by the Team GB coach as he looks to clarify which players from outside England are keen to participate in the London Games. The football associations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have made plain their reservations about Team GB while admitting they hold little sway over the personal choices of?players.

"I haven't had the chance to speak to the players but Scott Brown, James Forrest and Adam Matthews were sent formal invitations, as it were," Neil Lennon said.

With the scheduling of Olympic matches at Hampden Park in mind, the next Scottish Premier League season will start on 4 August, later than has become routine, a day after the final Olympic match in Glasgow. The Celtic manager admitted he would have reservations about the trio's participation in a tournament that runs until 11 August.

"We will sit down with them over the next few weeks and see what they are thinking," Lennon said. "If they want to go I can't stop them. It's the timing of it with the start of the season next year or the [European] qualifiers.

"My view is that football is not an Olympic sport, although it is a great spectating sport. But that is my own view, not the view of the club but if the players want to go, I am not going to discourage it."

Brown, the Celtic captain, will be 27 at the time of the games and therefore would have to be selected as one of Pearce's three overage players. The same would not apply to Forrest, a 20-year-old winger who has excelled for Celtic this season, or the Wales full-back Matthews, currently 19.

Interestingly, high-profile Scotland internationals such as Charlie Adam, Allan McGregor and Craig Gordon are yet to receive any similar letter from the British Olympic authorities.

Lennon, meanwhile, has said he would be interested in a move for Kris Boyd. The striker, most notable for his prolific scoring when a Rangers player, is a free agent after leaving the Turkish side Eskisehirspor. The odds remain stacked against Celtic signing him but, in a possible case of festive mischief-making, Lennon refused to rule that out.

"He is a proven goalscorer," the manager said. "I don't know how much football he has played of late but he is a player with a great record and any player like that would interest me.

"You are taking hypothetically here and are starting to speculate already, but regards to that question] would it be a problem that Boyd had played for Rangers? No, I can't see it being a problem."

Report: US mistakes led to Pakistan airstrikes (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Wall Street Journal says Pentagon investigators have determined that mistakes by a joint U.S.-Afghan special operations team led to the airstrikes that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers last month.

The newspaper says the Defense Department investigation found that coalition troops conducting operations along the Afghan border with Pakistan incorrectly believed there were no Pakistani forces in the area.

After the U.S. and Afghan commandos were attacked by militants, they called in airstrikes against two encampments they thought were used by militants. They were actually were Pakistan border posts.

The Journal, citing anonymous U.S. officials familiar with the report, says an opportunity to stop the fighting was missed when a U.S. serviceman gave incorrect data to the Pakistanis, so they did not know their posts were under attack.

Fla. congressman criticized for Nazi comparison (AP)

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. ? A Florida congressman who compared Democrats' efforts on shifting public opinion to those of a Nazi propagandist defended his comment Friday as criticism mounted.

Rep. Allen West, a freshman Republican, made the Nazi reference Thursday when asked about Congress' approval ratings and the blame the public has focused on Republicans.

"If Joseph Goebbels was around, he'd be very proud of the Democrat Party because they have an incredible propaganda machine," West said, according to Politico, which first reported the comments.

Goebbels was Adolf Hitler's propaganda minister.

West represents a district in South Florida, which has an influential Jewish constituency and a sizeable population of Holocaust survivors. He told reporters, in his remarks at the Capitol, that he was comparing Democrats to the Nazi propaganda, not the Nazis themselves, but that did little to quell controversy.

"Congressman West needs to immediately apologize for insulting the memories of the millions who lost their lives during the Holocaust," said Steve Israel, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. "Comparing political differences today to the worst Nazi propagandist diminishes what happened to millions of Jewish families during the Second World War. Unfortunately, this isn't the first time that Congressman West has made this type of hateful remark that makes a mockery of what millions of Jewish families suffered."

West is a tea party favorite who has repeatedly drawn attention for off-the-cuff comments. He defended his latest remarks, saying through a spokeswoman that twisting his comments was "a perfect example" of what he was talking about.

"Congressman West was referring to the `lies, deception and manipulation' coming from the Democrat propaganda machine and comparing that to the same misinformation coming from Goebbels during World War II," spokeswoman Angela Sachitano said.

Invoking Goebbels has gotten numerous public figures in hot water.

Earlier this year, Rep. Steve Cohen, a Tennessee Democrat, compared Republican arguments against the health overhaul law to those of Goebbels. California Gov. Jerry Brown, while running for office last year, caused a stir when he compared the advertising ability of his billionaire opponent to Goebbels. And a Brazilian foreign minister drew rebukes in 2008 for saying rich countries' deception in trade talks reminded him of Goebbels' tactics.

Jeb Bush: I???m not behind robocall in New Hampshire (Daily Caller)

A spokeswoman for Jeb Bush told The Daily Caller that the former Florida governor is not behind a mysterious robocall in New Hampshire that includes him as a possible choice in the 2012 Republican presidential race.

?News reports of the polling calls is how we first learned it was taking place,? Jaryn Emhof, a spokeswoman for Bush, told The Daily Caller.

?We don?t know who is behind it,? she stated flatly. ?Nothing has changed ? Gov. [Bush] is not running in 2012.?

There were multiple reports?on Wednesday of the existence of the calls, which once again?sparked speculation that the popular brother of former President George W. Bush could make a late entry into the race for the White House. He has repeatedly denied interest in running.

It?s possible the poll is from someone trying to convince Bush to take a second look. It?s also a possibility that it is from someone trying to make the point that voters desire someone other than the existing choices.

There?s still time for another candidate to jump in the race as late as February and win, University of Virginia professor Larry Sabato recently said on Fox News.

?I think for the Republicans, they would go back to the big stars who said ?no,?? he said.

U.S. "in contact with all sides" on Iran sanctions (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? The United States is in close contact with all parties including China on new sanctions against Iran, suspected by the West of developing nuclear weapons, Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel Poneman said on Thursday.

Poneman also said the United States would work with partners to ensure the global oil market remains well supplied.

"The United States is in very frequent and close contact with many members in the international community, certainly including China, our key partner in the U.N. Security Council," he told reporters of consultations on the sanctions.

"So we have very robust and continued consultation with all of those partners, including China."

His comments came a day after the U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation Wednesday that would expand sanctions on Iran, cracking down on a wider range of energy issues and closing some loopholes in existing energy and financial sanctions.

Some senators in both parties are also working on legislation to tighten sanctions on Iran, the world's fifth-biggest oil exporter.

"We'll have many consultations with U.S. Congress and I think you'll end up hearing the United States and the international community speaking with one voice in terms of the importance of Iran responding to these global requirements to comply with their international commitments," Poneman said.

Asked if the United States was concerned if China, the biggest buyer of Iranian crude, kept importing while other countries cut, he declined to comment directly but said it was important the oil market was well supplied.

"If the market remains well supplied, then alternatives to Iranian purchases are going to be available. That is why we particularly welcome continued efforts by the existing producers. I'm pleased also to see the production coming back," he said, referring to output resumption from Libya and Iraq.

"As long as we can work, with producers and consumers, to make sure that global market requirements and those of individual nations are met, that's the best thing we can do in the short term."

In the long term, it was important to change excess dependence on oil imports and diversify to other types of energy sources, such as nuclear power and renewable, he said.

Poneman was visiting Tokyo to discuss issues including nuclear cooperation with Japan following the radiation crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant triggered by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

Swipers won't be swiping on Ice Cream Sandwich... at least, not for a while. Swype tweeted the above message, indicating that the third-party keyboard company has its work cut out for it. It appears that Android changed things up this time around, including the way it reports screen resolution -- a crucial element to a keyboard, which naturally would cause a company like Swype a little bit of grief. No timeframe for availability has been set, but don't panic if you have to stick with the stock 'board on your brand new Galaxy Nexus for a spell.

Spector Pro 2011

The features found in parental control and monitoringutilities cover a very wide spectrum. They all aim to protect kids from Internet dangers, but the degree to which they monitor online activity varies. Way out in the ultraviolet end of the spectrum you find products strongly focused on monitoring, like Spector Pro 2011 ($99.95/direct). With this type of utility in place, absolutely everything that happens on the child's computer is recorded.

What's New
I reviewed an earlier version of this product, Spector Pro 2009 ($99.95 direct, 4 stars), several years ago. When I first installed the 2011 edition, I hardly saw any difference. I checked in with the company to learn just what's new.

Just about all of the improvements are things you can't see, it turns out. This version is updated for efficient in-program activity capture in all the latest browsers and chat clients. It's also up to date with the latest versions of Facebook and MySpace?at least, until they change again.

Jeani Park, SpectorSoft's senior director of product strategy explained, "Our recorder does a better job of capturing everything, on a broader set of applications, in shorter timeframes. So, the recorder component is more stable, more accurate, and faster, across more applications." Park continued, "This may sound simple, but it isn't. Engineers have to reverse engineer the monitored applications to understand how they operate, so we can be sure to faithfully record, play back, and present all activity within that monitored application."

This edition enhances the product's ability to run in stealth mode, undetected. Its screen capture feature is "triggered in more granular time elements, and saved locally for fast retrieval and playback." Once again, these enhancements aren't visible.

Stealth Install
During installation of the program you must agree that you'll only install it on a computer that you own, and that you'll inform those using the computer that they're being watched. Nothing stops you from lying, though. You could definitely use this monitoring power for evil, spying on a spouse or a co-worker. I'll assume, though, that you don't plan to do that. Maybe you'll even enable the option to warn users at logon that monitoring software is active.

PC Pandora 7.0 ($109.95 direct, 3.5 stars) displays a much more detailed privacy agreement during installation. However, users accustomed to clicking past EULAs probably won't even notice it.

A wary kid won't find an obvious monitoring process in Task Manager, or in a list of startup programs. The program filename is randomized for each installation, as are names of the data folder and data files, and even the extension for data files. Clearly stealth is important.

To bring up the reporting module, you press a special key combination that you define yourself. This brings up a password dialog that doesn't mention Spector Pro. Unless you enter the user-defined password that's as far as you'll get. More stealth here! PC Pandora and WebWatcher ($169.95 direct, 4 stars) use a similar pairing of special keystroke combination and password for access.

User Profiles
By default, Spector Pro's settings apply equally to all users of the system. If you want different handling for any particular Windows account, perhaps your own, you simply associate a new user profile with that account and change its settings.

For each profile, you can enable, disable, or fine-tune any of the ten areas that Spector Pro tracks. There's also an option to set a weekly schedule and monitor only during specific times. This might make sense if you use the computer during the day but give the kids access after work hours.

WebWatcher doesn't support multiple profiles. With PC Pandora you can turn overall monitoring on or off for specific Windows accounts.

CFTC set to vote on rule opposed by MF Global (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The futures regulator will vote on Monday on a rule that would put tighter limits on how brokerage firms can use customer funds, a measure now-bankrupt MF Global had encouraged the agency to delay.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission rule would no longer allow a brokerage firm, known as a futures commission merchant, to conduct so-called "in-house" transactions where it uses customers' funds to make proprietary trades for its own accounts, a process where the firm basically gives a loan to itself.

Transactions between affiliates of a company where the two entities exchange money or funds also would be restricted by the CFTC. Firms would still be able to enter into agreements using customer funds with an external third party.

"As recent events have highlighted, the protection and preservation of customer funds is fundamental to our markets," Scott O'Malia, a Republican commissioner, said in prepared remarks.

"By limiting investments of customer funds to a subset of instruments that currently have minimal risk, this final rule is a step towards enhancing customer protection," he said.

The measure, which was initially proposed by the CFTC in October 2010, stalled after a lack of support from other commissioners.

Many firms, including MF Global and its former chief executive, Jon Corzine, lobbied against the rule and asked the CFTC to hold back on tightening up the regulation. Any changes, they said, would hurt their firms and customers.

MF Global, which filed for bankruptcy on October 31 after investors got spooked by its large bets on European sovereign debt, is now under investigation for potentially raiding customer funds for the firm's use. Hundreds of millions of dollars in customer money is still unaccounted for.

It is uncertain whether the missing funds would have been protected by this new CFTC rule.

The push to finalize the rule gained momentum after MF Global's collapse.

NO TO RISKY SOVEREIGN DEBT

Currently, futures commission merchants are allowed to engage in internal repurchases, or so-called "repo" agreements. The transactions allow the firm to take customer funds and invest them in a range of securities, including sovereign debt.

In exchange for using the cash, firms are required to back it up with high-quality collateral such as Treasuries, something it appears MF Global failed to do.

Under the new CFTC rule, in cases where the brokerage firm is allowed to invest customer funds, the agency will permit them to invest in securities such as Treasuries, agency debt, corporate notes and commercial paper. Potentially risky sovereign debt will no longer be permitted.

The CFTC also plans to vote on Monday on a final rule outlining a formal registration system for foreign boards of trade that want to provide access to their system for members in the United States. Currently, there is no formal process, with approval granted by the CFTC through so-called "no-action" letters.

The regulator also plans to vote on a proposed rule that would detail a process for making a swap available to trade.

The CFTC, which is running behind on implementing rules, has yet to finalize many of the measures to complete a regulatory framework for the previously opaque $600 trillion over-the-counter derivatives market required under last year's Dodd-Frank law.

The regulator so far has finalized 18 rules, but most of the high-profile and controversial rules remain, including end-user exceptions and capital and margin requirements. (Editing by Muralikumar Anantharaman)

VLT finds fastest rotating star

Monday, December 5, 2011

An international team of astronomers has been using ESO's Very Large Telescope at the Paranal Observatory in Chile, to make a survey of the heaviest and brightest stars in the Tarantula Nebula, in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Among the many brilliant stars in this stellar nursery the team has spotted one, called VFTS 102, that is rotating at more than two million kilometres per hour ? more than three hundred times faster than the Sun and very close to the point at which it would be torn apart due to centrifugal forces. VFTS 102 is the fastest rotating star known to date.

The astronomers also found that the star, which is around 25 times the mass of the Sun and about one hundred thousand times brighter, was moving through space at a significantly different speed from its neighbours.

"The remarkable rotation speed and the unusual motion compared to the surrounding stars led us to wonder if this star had had an unusual early life. We were suspicious." explains Philip Dufton (Queen's University Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK), lead author of the paper presenting the results.

This difference in speed could imply that VFTS 102 is a runaway star -- a star that has been ejected from a double star system after its companion exploded as a supernova. This idea is supported by two further clues: a pulsar and an associated supernova remnant in its vicinity.

The team has developed a possible back story for this very unusual star. It could have started life as one component of a binary star system. If the two stars were close, gas from the companion could have streamed over and in the process the star would have spun faster and faster. This would explain one unusual fact ? why it is rotating so fast. After a short lifetime of about ten million years, the massive companion would have exploded as a supernova ? which could explain the characteristic gas cloud known as a supernova remnant found nearby. The explosion would also have led to the ejection of the star and could explain the third anomaly ? the difference between its speed and that of other stars in the region. As it collapsed, the massive companion would have turned into the pulsar that is observed today, and which completes the solution to the puzzle.

Although the astronomers cannot yet be sure that this is exactly what happened, Dufton concludes "This is a compelling story because it explains each of the unusual features that we've seen. This star is certainly showing us unexpected sides of the short, but dramatic lives of the heaviest stars."

Obama, fellow Democrats push tax cut extension (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama cranked up pressure on congressional Republicans on Monday to extend a payroll tax cut, and his fellow Democrats proposed to fund it with spending cuts and a "tiny surtax" on the rich.

Speaking at the White House, Obama said the popular tax break needs to be renewed for the sake of millions of Americans and the weak U.S. economy.

"Although the unemployment rate went down last month, our recovery is still fragile," Obama said in calling for renewal of the payroll tax cut set to expire at the end of this month.

At same time, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced a new modified proposal that covers the cost of an extension with a "mixture of spending cuts" and a "tiny, tiny surtax" on the wealthiest Americans.

Though Reid did not immediately provide details, he said, "This is a serious proposal and Republicans should take it seriously."

Citing public support, Reid said, "Republicans in Congress dismiss it at their peril."

There was no immediate response from Republicans in the Senate or the House of Representatives, who have been struggling to find a unified position.

Earlier this month, Republicans were reluctant to embrace Obama's call to extend the payroll tax cut, voicing concerns about the cost and whether it would stimulate the economy.

But with fears of a political backlash in the run-up to the November 2012 presidential and congressional elections, at least some of their leaders decided to push for an extension - provided an agreement can be reached on how to pay for it.

Without congressional action by December 31, the payroll tax that workers pay to help fund the Social Security retirement program would revert to 6.2 percent, up from the current 4.2 percent tax. On average, it would cost American families about $1,000 a year.

A simple extension of current payroll tax cut for workers would cost about $110 billion next year.

Davis' block lifts No. 1 Kentucky over No. 5 UNC (AP)

LEXINGTON, Ky. ? Pushed and pressured all day, Anthony Davis finally went somewhere else no one could on the floor. Up.

The Kentucky freshman soared to block John Henson's shot in the final seconds and No. 1 Kentucky held on to beat No. 5 North Carolina 73-72 on Saturday to extend the Wildcats' home winning streak to 39 games.

"I just jumped as high as I could with my arm up," said Davis, who had seven points and nine rebounds. "I thought I probably would (block it). I have long hands."

Freshman Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had 17 points and 11 rebounds as a spark Kentucky (8-0) needed early before Doron Lamb took control in the second half with 12 of his 14 points as more than two dozen NBA scouts and front office personnel watching one of the most heavily hyped matchups of the season.

"I didn't realize, because I hadn't been watching much TV, that this game was being played up like the end alls of end alls," Kentucky coach John Calipari said.

And it came down to a memorable finish on the final possession.

Reggie Bullock hit a 3-pointer for North Carolina (6-2) to cut the Wildcats' lead to 73-72 with 48 seconds left. After freshman Marquis Teague missed the front end of a one-and-one, Davis blocked Henson's shot, grabbed the rebound and the Wildcats ran out the clock.

"If he doesn't block the shot, we lose," Calipari said. "Both teams gutted it out, just gutted it out. This is supposed to be March, not now. I'm exhausted."

Tyler Zeller and Harrison Barnes scored 14 points apiece for the Tar Heels, who led by as many as nine in the first half and held a six-point lead in the second before Kentucky rallied.

The Wildcats haven't lost at Rupp Arena since Calipari took over, a span of 38 games that includes winning their final one at home under Billy Gillispie.

Lamb converted a three-point play as part of a 7-0 run that gave Kentucky a 63-60 lead. After Zeller hit a jumper to cut it to one, Lamb hit a pair of 3s, the second in the corner that gave the Wildcats a 69-64 lead with 3:47 left.

"He had a couple of layups, a couple of threes and they were big shots, they were big shots. That one in the corner was a huge shot and he knocked it down," Calipari said. "I've got good players. We're young, we're inexperienced, but I have really good players."

After a 3-pointer by Barnes, North Carolina's 11th of the game, made it 69-67. Darius Miller's basket made it 71-67. Henson hit two free throws and Kidd-Gilchrist answered with two more before Bullock's 3 set up the final sequence.

After Teague missed the front end of the one-and-one following a foul by Kendall Marshall with 21 seconds left, the Tar Heels had one more chance.

Marshall found Zeller and as Terrence Jones came to double team, he found Henson. Henson went up for a winner, but Davis used his 6-foot-10 frame and massive wingspan to block the ball. He grabbed the rebound as North Carolina never tried to foul as time expired.

"He came from the other side of the lane, it was a great play by him," Henson said.

Jones finished with 14 points and Miller had 12 for the Wildcats. North Carolina's P.J. Hairston scored 11 and Henson finished with 10.

Kentucky last reached No. 1 under Calipari in 2009-10, but promptly its their first game after receiving the ranking. The Wildcats beat St. John's 81-59 on Thursday night before this matchup ? the first between top five teams in Lexington in 13 years.

Last year, these two teams played a pair of memorable games with North Carolina winning 75-73 in Chapel Hill before Kentucky topped the Tar Heels 76-69 in the NCAA regional finals in March.

This one was equally as entertaining even though North Carolina slipped from the No. 1 spot last week when they lost to UNLV in Las Vegas to keep this from being the first No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup in the 35-year history of Rupp Arena.

The Tar Heels committed five early turnovers, but Hairston, who had been questionable to play because of a sprained left wrist, hit a pair of 3-pointers upon entering to give North Carolina a 24-18 lead.

A jumper by Barnes extended it to 34-25, the biggest deficit the Wildcats faced this season and Kentucky trailed at the half for the first time this season, 43-38.

It's the first time the two schools have met this highly ranked since Dec. 26, 1981 in East Rutherford, N.J., when Michael Jordan, James Worthy and Sam Perkins combined for 66 points in North Carolina's 82-69 victory.

Kentucky standout Sam Bowie didn't play in that game because of a stress fracture in his left leg, but that game still featured 18 draft picks ? including five that went in the first two rounds. The NBA draft was 10 rounds through 1984.

This matchup had even more media anticipation and Kentucky's young squad that starts three freshmen and two sophomores responded.

"It wasn't going to be for the national title. It was a lot of hype," Jones said. "Teams can get so much better from now until March that it's hard to judge a game like this."
